Help Calendar questions/help

Hey folks,

I've recently switched from the 4g to the 3d. I'm having an issue with my calendar and can't find a solution.

Every couple of weeks, my calendar gets off by a day. For example, if I press today's date on the calendar widget, it opens to today and shows today's date, but shows my events from yesterday.

I've called sprint the response I get from them is to pull the battery and all should be fine.

If I restart the phone, it will fix itself, but I'd like to find a real fix.

I am using google calendar and I only have one calendar. It seems to happen when I add several events from my computer.

Anyone else have this issue?

Thanks,

Mark

I haven't had that issue, but I've seen other bugs in this latest HTC Calendar - was driving me crazy.

Another member recommended this one to try - and I've ended up using it instead of the HTC one.

The big 4x4 widget here isn't as smexy as the HTC one - but it's way more functional, and closer in how it works to my original Evo calendar (before they started improving it downwards).

So - give it a shot, if the problem goes away, it's an HTC defect, if it doesn't, then something is syncing wrong - maybe even over on Google's side, not the phone. Can't tell until you try and report back.

Hope this helps!

First of all let me say these are the kind of issues that make me wish my palm (which worked fine out of the box) wasn't ancient technology. In fact I still carry and use it as android is a mega fail (for me) at PIM stuff.

I don't currently use Google calendar but was trying to screw around with it the other day to see what it could do. I created some calendars with different colors and some events and when I tried sync to the phone only my main calendar would sync but no additional calendars I created would sync over. I found a couple posts scattered about the internet regarding this problem but nothing with a definitive answer, and nothing specifically for the 3vo, though it seems to be a general android glitch.

Aside from help with this specifically can anyone tell me what the general limitations of the stock 3vo calendar are? e.g. what kind of things won't it sync or show or do that Google calendar will. I'd hate to set up google calendar to my liking only to find out the phone won't even accept or show it the way it's set up.

I sync two google calendars and it works just fine. Just have to ensure that both calendars are set up to sync, and that both calendars are set to visible in my widget that I use to view the calendars.

I've set it so that it shows all appointments (from both calendars) in the same view.

Can you describe the problem you encountered? Multiple Calendars - all google? outlook? Palm? Where is the information for these calendars stored? How did you connect to it and sync?

If you use outlook, it isn't that hard to try out. Install google calendar sync application (free) and sync your outlook calendar to your gmail acct. Then, set up your phone to sync to gmail. It is now a 3 way sync. Any change you make on either your PC/outlook, gmail or phone will automatically update the other two places.

Compared to Palm? Yes, palm did handle PIM well, but so far, I've found Android to be better than Palm at just about everything (including PIM)

Its all in Google and like I mentioned before it was just a couple of experiments to explore the Google/android calendar and their capabilities. I added a calendar on Google and created a couple events in the main calendar and the newly created one. All calendars were set to be visible, including the US holidays one. Then I hit sync now on the phone. All that will sync or show up is the main calendar, none of the read only, and no additional ones that I create.
I haven't tried to throw outlook into the mix just yet but that's coming later. I gave up on syncing locally so I'm forced to use the three way cloud method (being unwilling to pay an extra 50 bucks for may or may not work solutions).
Bit off topic but you say you find android PIM better than palm... care to elaborate? How so and what apps are you using for everything? My main gripe is lack of tasks and notes, and the ability to sync them to PC, cloud or local. There seems to be no "clean" solution. I've explored a few apps but nothing stuck me as awesome yet. Native contacts and if i can get it to work, calendar, should be adequate for my needs.

menu/settings/accounts and sync - are all your accounts set up to sync?
Also, which calendar app are you using? I use the agenda widget - just had to ensure that all calendars were set to sync ( in the widget, menu, settings, check "all calendars")

If that doesn't work, you could share your 2nd calendar to your main calendar and that way, just sync to one calendar - but this shouldn't really be needed (the regular sync worked for me).

I like the fact that unlike with my older "Palm" days, I don't have to connect my phone to the computer to get anything synced up. As long as I have my data (contacts and calendar) on gmail, it syncs up automatically. (I don't even have to initiate the sync - a change on either side gets pushed to the other automatically).

Regarding tasks & notes, you are right. They don't have a native application that will sync to your google tasks yet. gTasks will let you sync your phone to google tasks though.

For notes, I use gmail with labels. In other words, when I have to create a note from my phone, I hit the search button, and say "note to self", followed by the note. It automatically creates an Email to my gmail acct and sends the note to my Email acct. It shows up in my gmail acct with the label of "Note to self" - see How to Use Gmail as Your Central, Universal Communications Hub - "unified inbox" section. Now, when I log into gmail, I can see all my 'notes' in a section by itself.

Or you could use the Evernote app (supposed to be the best out there) for notes.

If you still need to sync to your PC (instead of using gmail), you can always install HTC Sync on your PC and bypass gmail altogether. Your outlook contacts/calendar will get synced by this application when you connect your phone to your PC.

It looked familiar. I have downloaded the paid version from amazon, but never installed it. Thanks again.

Just using the native HTC calendar. How would i do this calendar sharing? My main goal is to keep certain events color coded so I can differentiate between them at a glance. Something I rely heavily on. And also to keep a sync going between my phone and somewhere. I tried a few calendar apps. So far nothing stands out.

I don't mind physically connecting to my laptop, as i'm at it several times a day. I have HTC sync but that doesn't solve my notes/tasks problem. I rely heavily on those functions. I thought the using gmail for notes solution was a bit sloppy really. I've spent a lot of time researching all this stuff and I feel like I'm up against a brick wall. It's frustrating because I keep winding up back at switching back to my old palm, but I DO like finally having a non prehistoric device.

For color coding, I'm not sure. Check out the "Business Calendar" that earlymon linked to in his post above. It does seem to have color coded events in the images (not sure if it is auto-colored based on source calendar though). They have a free version, so you can try it out.
(even calendar sharing would get you into the same issue - no color coding that I can see)

I don't know why the events aren't syncing though - that part works (I use it daily, so I know it works)
(You verified that your accts are set up to sync and that your widget has all calendars selected, right?)

For notes and tasks, you could try the apps I suggested (evernote and gTasks)

Hopefully, other forum members might have better suggestions :)

I have played around with Business Cal and it's a possible idea.

I'd like to clear a couple things up, just to make sure I'm on the same page. When we are talking about multiple calendars in Google, I'm thinking of clicking create new calendar, and assigning it a name and color. The events show up on the calendar and are color coded accordingly. You can change event colors individually on any calendar but that takes away grouping/filtering certain events. Am I on the right track?

When you say make sure my accts are all set up to sync, to my knowledge yes they are. But can you describe that exactly to be sure?
Just sing the stock HTC calendar widget at the moment and as far as what's selected to show, it's just PC Sync and Google, no specific calendar names. All calendars is also checked. Perhaps i'm looking in the wrong place? Or that widget sucks? lol

So after a bit more fooling around......

It appears the stock HTC calendar and widget has a glitch? Business calendar recognized all my Google calendars, and after setting them to show there, they show in HTC calendar/widget too. HTC cal/widget will sync the deleting of a calendar properly on its own but not the creation of one. Maybe thats something that was fixed in the calendar's updates, I haven't yet applied any.
