[Verizon] How to use native SMS for Google Voice

I don't know if anyone else wants to do this but I found a way to use Google Voice with the native SMS app on the Galaxy Nexus. Also, using the native voicemail notification for Google Voice messages.

The greatest part is you don't have to have a data connection in order to receive Google Voice TEXT messages when you do this. I've tested it several times with all data (mobile and wifi) turned off and Google Voice text messages still come in, and they are integrated in my native SMS app.

Open Google Voice App>Sync and notifications>Receive text messages>SELECT Via the messaging app.

While you are on the Sync and notifications screen check "Voicemail Notificaions". If you want it to vibrate or have a special ringtone set it there.

Once you have finished, back out one screen. Put a checkmark in "Voicemail Display". I selected "View and play voicemails from the phone call log". Back out and close your Google Voice app.

You should be set to go. This may be common knowledge and I'm late the the party. I've asked about how to do this multiple times and have been told by more than one person that it can't be done. Now it can.

One last thing. If it doesn't work for you, perhaps it's a tweak that my Galaxy Nexus has that you don't. I'm running AOKP Milestone 5. I have Inverted Google Voice installed and Inverted SMS. I'm not sure if that will make a difference.

If you get this to work, let me know.

***EDIT***
One note: While Google Voice text messages come through with or without data using this method, voice messages will not come through until you have a data connection.

Do you know if this counts towards any SMS limits from the carrier? Part of the reason I use GV is to get around that, so I'm curious as to how that works, if you can still receive SMS without a data/wifi connection.

Either way, nice tip.

Edit: Thought this may be of some help, too. http://android.stackexchange.com/qu...ard-texts-only-when-im-not-using-google-voice

When you reply to a message sent to your google voice number, does it send from that number? I ask because I often use google voice when i'm texting internationally so i don't have to pay $0.50 a text, so if going about it this way goes through the carrier then I'll probably keep it separate. I'm guessing the answer is it does send from my mobile # (not grand central)...

Now if someone would just explain how to set up the Google Voice app when the phone has service disconnected, using WiFi only, we'd be set!

It asks to verify your phone number by sending a text from your phone, but if the service is discontinued, you're prevented from completing the sign in. In a device such as an iPod Touch, which is WiFi only, you don't have to deal with the whole verification process -- just sign in and start sending texts directly from the GV app over Wifi. I'd love to be able to do that from my WiFi only Android phone.

Bumping this to get details on the sending portion. I changed the settings mentioned in the OP and sent a text message and it never gave me the option to select standard phone # or GV #. Have I don't something wrong or could that be because I already had conversations open in my messaging app so it just used the method previously used? In other words, if you get the popup and select one or the other is this a one-time thing so long as you still have the conversation going in your messaging app?

Edit: Tried it again with someone not currently in my messaging conversations list and same thing... it just sends w/o giving an option of which # to send it from. What am I doing wrong here? I use my phone for personal and business and text with both so I'd rather not send someone a message from my personal phone number.

Yes I want to know also. I want to be able to send SMS to #s not in my contact list or sms/call history using gv without the gv/hangouts app or using data/wifi.

In the Gvoice APP I chose the option to forward messages to linked number.

As in this post, I would text a contact from my Gvoice APP and waited for a reply

When contact replied, I saved that number.

Then using phone native message app, I am able to text from phone to contact and it shows up as my Gvoice number

PROBLEM now. I did that with 2 contacts. In Gvoice APP I have those 2 contacts in a group text.

I tried using the new saved number for both and tried a group text with phone native message app. It was sent out but it used my phone number not my Gvoice number.

Thoughts?
