Noob's question on google contacts

Hi there, need a little advice as this will be my first Android mobile.

I have about 300-odd contacts on my Gmail account - most, if not all, have no telephone number information on them, but I am guessing they still get copied over to the phone? Such that I will have a contact card on the phone that has no number, just an email?

I don't email that much from my phone, so it seems pointless having most of these "email only" contacts on my phone.

Secondly, a number of these contacts are named by email address i.e. some contact names appear as "doug1986" simply because Gmail has taken it from the email address doug1986@whatever.com. I really rather not have these synced across tot he mobile as they are old addresses (which I still dont want to delete).

Can I pick and choose what gets synced?

If you are avidly using an android device, get used to getting on gmail because your going to need to to sync a few things. what you can do is sync the ones you want by actually getting the phone numbers. when i added new contacts to my phone, all i had to do was add their name and all of the contact information was synced. try it out by first entering those tedious numbers in on gmail.

I use Gmail alot and I am happy to sync my phone with every google product i use. I will do what you suggest and have a good ticker round with it.

Slightly off topic but I have similar issue with facebook, can you choose not to import all facebook friends onto your phone as contacts?? I just wanna be able to use facebook on the Desire but not have all my facebook people on my contacts.

yes you can once you enter the name of your desired synced contact their phone number profile picture and e-mail will be automatically synced.

people -> menu button -> view
and choose which contacts you want to see, and which you dont.

Allows you to only view contacts which actually have a phone number, as well as to view or hide facebook 'friend' contacts, but you can still link your normal contacts to their facebook account.

Untick Show auto gmail contacts. I believe selecting this means it will add every person you ever email from your gmail account as a new contact, unticking it means it will only sync the group of contacts you use on your phone (I think)
