For those who upgraded to the latest modaco rom and couldn't receive text messages

I decided to root my phone yesterday using the guides from theunlockr.com. I had problems with my first attempt and couldn't receive any text messages so I thought I would post how I resolved it. It might not work for everyone but might help some of you (note, I was previously on t-mobile uk).

First I rooted my phone using How To: Root Your HTC Hero in One Click!

I then installed backup for root users and backed up everything.

Then I updated my rom using the guide How To: Load a Custom ROM on Your HTC Hero and the latest core rom from modaco

After restoring the backup I booted up. First thing I noticed was that nothing was backed up. Which wasn't really a major problem if I'm honest as all my contacts were backed up on my sim and all my pictures were on my sd card...was just a bit of a pain in the arse to download everything again.

I used skype to phone and text my phone to see everything was working ok.
Calls worked fine, emails downloaded fine however there was a problem with text messages. When receiving a text the phone would vibrate and make a sound as usual but there was no indication of a text at the top (notifications bar) or in the message area.

I tried installed a few things (including chomp sms) but nothing worked. I then wiped everything and reloaded the update.zip file. Again, same problem.

Finally I installed the HTC Generic 2.73.405.5 rooted rom (the first one listed) from this page. It is still an up to date rom but just didn't have some of the added programs of the other rom (kernel 2.6.27 and Build number 2.73.405.5)

Text messages are now working 100% correctly. There must be something in the latest rom which is conflicting with it.

I know everyone keeps saying that it is much faster though I haven't been using for calls/music etc yet to notice a difference (mainly because I was trying to get it working the whole time).

I'm out all day today for a friends birthday so will be calling and texting a lot. I'll let you know if I notice any major differences in performance.

I definitely wiped my rom the first time. I didn't the 2nd time though and it's working great.

You restored a backup though, didn't you? Did that include SMS msgs? If so then the old database would be restored.

There are several posts in the xda-developers and MoDaCo forums from users with similar issues who updated to the generic ROM, so the problem is definitely not unique to the MCR versions.
