Absolutely right. My note 10.1 is a UK Spec wi-fi only model, and would not read a 64gig card straight out of the box. They are formatted in exFat out of the box. Some Note tablets are reported to read this but mine won't.
In the end I had to format the card in an SXDC card reader using my pc and a program that allows you to format a fat32 partition that is larger than 32bytes. The 32 gbyte limit is a windows restriction, not a fat32 limit.
What brand of sd card did u use? I tried SanDisk and didn't work, did some research and ended up formatting it in my s3 still doesn't work. I use the exact same one in my s3 and it works fine but not in my note :-( doesn't even recognise it to perform format

Try using chkdsc in PC. Your card might have physical errors that needs to be flagged. After that format on your own computer with fat32. Hope this works out for you as in my case.
