Does the S4 have separate "internal storage" and "phone storage"?

My EVO 4G LTE has these two separate categories of storage, "phone storage" being the advertised 16GB (although really only about 9GB, like the S4). The "internal storage" is apparently where apps default to, and where other system files are located (2GB for apps, 4GB for other stuff it seems).

Does the S4 also have this separate area for app installations, or are apps installed into the 16GB section by default? Just trying to figure out how much TOTAL space there is on the phone.

The place where your apps and data is stored in part of the 16 GBs that's part of the internal memory. On my AT&T phone, there's 9.62 GBs of space that's available for use.

The MicroSD card is listed as other storage but you probably already knew that.

Well I'm just looking at the Storage information in Settings, and it shows apps as a part of the 9+gb total, so from that I would say it's all grouped together...

However there must be a separate storage area for system applications, to account for the few missing GB

Older Androids have that Internal + Phone Storage setup, the GS2 also has that, but phones built on Android4.0 above don't have this. In newer phones you get Device Memory, that is the 16GB/32GB/64GB and then SD Card, your MicroSD. Thats it.

Yep, GB and before had a system and user allocation of internal storage. That went away somewhere along the line with ICS. There IS a mapping for it though and usually the internal storage where larger data for apps goes to is "sdcard0". The external card is usually mapped as sdcard1 or extSDcard. Neither though can be mapped concurrently with the internal sdcard0 and is part of the security of JB.

This is a key exmaple of the misinformation too, since reps may tell you to open a file app and point out the "sdcard0", and assume it is the external card. It is not and they are very wrong.

I confirmed this with my buddy from Verizon corporate. Most all really think that the sdcard0 is the external sd card where app data goes. Factor that in with the specs statement, "The sd card provides STORAGE" expansion" and the perfect mix for wrong information across a wide scale.
