Linking a friend's Facebook profile

I've entered my Facebook login details via Home->Menu->Settings->Social Networks. I can see that this has been successful because my Facebook photo is now shown on "My contact card" under profile.

However, when I go to a contact (who is a friend on Facebook) in the People app, then to the "Updates and events" page, then click on "Link Facebook profile ... choose from friends", no friends are shown in the "Pick friend" screen. Instead this just says "Friends data is either downloading or unavailable." If I click Menu->"Update now", it then says "Contact list is empty"

I guess I needed to be more patient. Most "friends" have now appeared on the Hero. However, one friend (my wife!) still doesn't appear in the "Pick friends" screen in the People App when I try to link her Facebook profile. It's probably no coincidence that where she has posted a message on my wall the Facebook App on my Hero doesn't show her name, but says "Facebook User".

So far as we can see there's nothing wrong with her privacy settings and her name appears in full in the Facebook page when viewed in the web browser on my PC. Can anyone suggest where I might have gone wrong?

I wonder whether it might have something to do with the fact that we both use the same GMail account.

At the time I first signed up to Facebook on the Hero she was using this GMail account as her Facebook sign-in. When I noticed that she wasn't appearing as one of my Friends I thought that the use of the same GMail account might be confusing the Hero, so she changed her Facebook sign-in to a different email account, but it hasn't solved the problem.

I'm having the same problem. Most of my contacts are fine, linked into their Facebook - using contact photo and displaying updates and albums.
But my girlfriend and a couple of other friends don't work.
I was wondering if the other half has a privacy setting of some kind which prevents mobile devices accessing her account, but having looked at her settings I can't see anything.

Anyone else got any ideas?

(P.S. first post, so: hello all)

Edit:
Fixed! It was a security setting. After doing the below everything is working as it should for the gf's profile.

1)Get the person to log into Facebook.
2) Go to Settings>Privacy Settings>Applications>Settings
3) in 'What Other Users Can See via the Facebook Platform' make sure various elements from 'share my name, networks....' are checked.

This allows your chosen Facebook app to access these elements from the persons Facebook profile.

Thanks, skrudd. My wife and I now have a full relationship!

Before I read your notes about Applications Settings I had tried removing her as my Facebook friend, logging out of Facebook on the Hero, adding her back as a Facebook friend again, and logging back into Facebook on the Hero.

After this, her name now appeared against her entries in the Facebook app (she was no longer merely Facebook User.) However, she still didn't appear in the Pick friend page in the People app.

So, after reading your post, we had a look at her Applications settings and found that she had none selected. So we selected a few. However, she still didn't appear in the Pick friend page in the People app on the Hero.

So I again went through the process of removing her from my list of Facebook friends, logging out of Facebook on the Hero, re-establishing our friendship, logging back in, and she is now listed in the Pick friend screen and her Facebook profile photo has been picked up by the Hero. Phew!

Thanks.

(Incidentally, there seem to be two separate places on the Hero to log in and out of Facebook ... in Settings -> Social networks, and in the Facebook app. Does anyone know how these two log-ins interact?)

Glad it worked for you too! Now to convince the handful of other friends to change their settings...

Hazarding an uneducated guess at the interaction between the apps, I would say their is little, if any, actual interaction.
The log in from settings > social networks allows the Hero to pull information about contacts into the 'people' app. While the Facebook app is for actually using facebook: making wall posts and the like.

So, not being logged in from settings will stop you viewing a persons album in the people app and stop the contact photo being updated. However, you can still use the Facebook app and all the activities that come with that.
On the other hand you can be logged in via settings and not have the Facebook app logged in or even installed. So contact pics will update and you can view albums in 'people' but you can't really use Facebook.

But I wonder why you would want to be logged in in Facebook, but not in Settings (i.e People).

Wouldn't it be better design (and less tedious, not to say confusing) if there was just one place to log in and out that was referenced by both Facebook and People? If thought necessary, the log-in could have check-boxes for the two kinds of access, so you could control which App had access to your Facebook details. I would certainly find that a lot easier to understand!

The social networks login allows you to access Facebook for instance. Then you can link your contacts (in Edit) to FB and you will see their notifications in a menu when you chose them to make a call... Also their picture will populate their contact as well (gone are the days of having to take pics of your friends and associating them with a contact...
