Root HTC Desire + Goldcard = Root/Debrand?

Hi all!
First post so go easy on me... :p

Basically I have been looking at Paul from modaco's guide on how to create a 'goldcard' that allows you to flash RUU files with a different CID to your device. (URL: Creating a GoldCard - Android @ MoDaCo). In my case this would be useful for the purpose of removing T-mobile's branding from my HTC Desire so as I can receive OTA updates from HTC rather than waiting on T-mobile (by replacing current ROM with the generic one).

The second potential use I can see for this is flashing a ROM with a known root procedure to the Desire so as it can be rooted before replacing the generic HTC Desire ROM.

I'm looking for someone with a little more experience in these matters than myself (and knowledge gained through extensive googling!) to confirm the possibility of either of these two procedures or just generally discuss. Surely if it's as easy as this to root the Desire it would have been done already??

Thanks for your time guys!
Patrick

Thanks SJamG!

Sorry for the repost.. Any thoughts on the second point? Is there any possibility of flashing a different (rootable) ROM on (i.e. a rom from another phone) before proceeding to root before reflashing the generic firmware?

I'm not sure if this is even possible.. hence the seeking advice :)

Some roms will work in that way and some dont.

I put the genric rom on with root access using modaco r6 guide. Once this is done, you no longer need the gold card, i believe.

14/Jun r6 riskfreeroot - HTC Desire rooting guide - now with HBOOT 0.80 and OS to 1.21 support - Android @ MoDaCo

Its easy enough to change roms once you have a generic rom with root access. Just install rom manager and choose teh install from SD card option, where you will have alreeady put the rom of your choice on there.

I wrote a post about how to go about it and a few folks have contributed to it. Check it out:

Hope this helps.

Hi SJamG,

I have recently bought a HTC desire and unfortunately it has a third party ROM installed on it. I have been reading through the forums and this was the only reply that made a little bit sense to me.

I have no idea what a Goldcard is and how can I restore my phone to its original ROM for its original UI.

If you can please guide me, I shall be grateful.

Thanks and Regards,

Smith
