Made the switch from iPhone to Desire today.

Ditched my trusty iPhone 3G in favour of a Desire today. I've been an iPhone user since launch day of the 2G so I was definately in need of a change. I loved my iPhone to bits but was getting seduced my Android more and more each day until I eventually caved and went for the Desire.

I ordered from Orange as they offered me the best deal and I was slightly nervous once I'd read everybody hating on the Orange version on this forum but I have no problem with it whatsoever, the branding is minimal, a few shortcuts that can be deleted and GTalk can be easily installed. Fair enough the demo links are annoying but they sit in my tray which I will rarely use anyway.

My main worry was that I'd miss the slickness and ease of use of the iPhone but the Desire is just as slick if not more so, I've experienced no slow down as of yet and everything seems easy to navigate and use.

I listen to music a whole lot on my phone aswell and the audio player on the Desire is just as good as the iPhone player in my opinion, I prefer the ease of drag and drop aswell as my music collection is already tagged.

I've heard some people complain about the camera but coming from an iPhone 3G the Desire's camera is amazing :p

All in all a very happy camper so far! If you're getting tired of the iPhone then I definately wouldn't hesitate in recommending the switch to the Desire, it's a great piece of kit.

The only downish side so far is the Andorid Market seems a bit of a maze compared to the App Store. So far I have downloaded:

Dolphin Browser
Astro File Manager
BeebPlayer
Snesoid

So I have a couple of Market related questions:

Are there any must have apps that I should make a priority to download?
Is Dolphin the best browser to use?
Are there any media players that play FLAC files?
Are there any live football score apps similar to livescore on the iPhone?

and finally, I will be getting myself a 16gb card soon to replace the 4gb that comes with the Desire, can you simply drag and drop the contents of the 4gb card to the new card and have a seamless transition?

Thanks for any answers.

No. Opera is shit. It may be fast, but on a high-end smartphone, the way it renders webpages turns everything into turd. No kinetic scrolling, no optimization for touch, only one level of zoom. Opera Mini can go die.

Is Dolphin the best browser to use?

No. Dolphin isn't as polished as, say, xScope and doesn't have the functionality of the Desire's default browser. Actually, the Desire browser is pretty amazing.

Yep.

Welcome to Android! You have now been saved from the evil Iphone!

Okay, MUST HAVE APPS!
1) My Lookout (antivirus, antispyware, data backup/recovery, GPS locator, etc)

2) Bump - as an EX-Iphone you already know how great this is

3) Barcode Scanner - does what it says on the tin, also used for downloading apps

4) Shazam - finds song details by listening to it

Only ones i can think of off the top of my head. Have alook around the forum, theres usually posts about apps and games:)

No tabs though. They need to sort that out pronto. I don't like the way things open in a new window without even informing you. Then you hit the maximum window limit and have to go close down a couple.

Tabstabstabs!

Don't download Robo Defense, btw. It's android crack.

...just a thought, and sorry for asking this on your thread, but should I have copied the 4gb card to my 16gb card first, before switching cards? Would it cause any problems? I am having major connection problems at the moment. Just a though.

well done. i am in your boat as well though my previous phone was the 3gs.

only issue atm is the android market compared to the appstore.
also i have several programs that are in my all programs list that i cannot remove due to the phone being a telstra phone. im assuming i have to put up with that?

Have to admit, the android market is a let down. Talk as much as you like about Apple and how inflexible they are but they nailed the app store. Sure some guff made it onto the app store but the lack of any QC on the android version is a bad thing.

There are some quality games from big names on the app store, Android just isn't competing right now. Perhaps thats a limitation of the platform, it's running on so many devices it's hard to tailor games to a specific standard?
