Slow Charging Time

I don't know if this is a Sony or an Android thing but my Xperia Z is slow at charging even with the supplied sony charger and cable (or a kindle cable) and when I try to use a generic micro usb it's even slower (in fact it sometimes feels like the non sony cable is simply preventing battery run down and not really adding charge).

Has anyone else found similar or got a solution (i've moved to this phone from a succession of iPhones which always charged fast)

I'm not an expert on batteries but based on my experience with other phones I think lithium-Ion batteries take a while to charge and are also quick to drain for the first couple of day's. Same problem as Me it takes about 4 hours for my Xperia Z to fully charge but only takes 3 hours to drain (while watching movies) After a couple of charge cycles though it should work as normal. based on my experience

Thanks for that and fingers crossed it does improve however I've had the phone for a fortnight now, just need to be a bit more patient I guess

I find that it charges very slowly when connected to a computer but charges very quickly when connected to the mains regardless of whether I use the charger it came with or any other usb charger (charges quickly with a Samsung or BlackBerry charger).

The difference is that your computers usb puts out a lower amperage then a wall charger make it take longer to charge.

Quite a lot lower, as it turns out.

A standard USB port outputs a maximum of 500mA. The supplied charger, otoh, has a rated output of 1500mA.

Some of the after market wall chargers are 2100mA.

Also just an fyi some of the newer Macs usb output is higher at 1600mA so they will charge the ipads while syncing.

How slow is slow? My phone charges from about 30% to 100% in approx. 2 hours (give or take). Charging will take a whole lot longer if the phone is being used or if you have background apps or services running, preventing the phone from entering standby mode (ie. WiFi hotspot, navigation software keeping the GPS receiver on, etc.)

That's not bad. My bionic takes at least 3 hours for 70%. But my battery is probable different size.

Update: your battery is actually larger then mine so I think 2 hours is pretty good. Since your wall charger is most likely a 1 amp charger and the USB is .5 it should take about twice as long to charge from the PC than the wall charger. If you have a 2.1 amp Charger than the PC should be about 4 times longer.

Devices will regulate what the battery gets, some will allow more through then others.

USB puts out a very small voltage only. So it could take a lot longer for the battery to final adopt and charge quickly. My experience: at first, the battery is actually DRAINING rather than charging, but after 5 minutes, it starts charging up, and 10 mins later, it is charging up quite quickly. About 3/4 the rate of wall chargers. Just wait a bit longer. BTW, my USB port is rated 500mA. So pretty slow. I want to ask if it will be faster if I charget it on the 1A port in stead of the 500mA. It seems quite the same...

You'd need a 1A output and its modified data pins (like your wall charger has it )...

Ok let me just put all this nonsense to rest, came from iPhone I wanted to root/unlock/develop with android devices for fun, bought the Xperia Z1 Compact D5503 and plugged in for a full charge, took 8 HOURS! OMG iPhone was 90 min to full charge, in disbelief I researched google and came across forums like this; people stating the phone cannot charge faster because it can only take so much amp/volt rate simultaneously, or the USB can only charge so fast. So how do you explain this, I plugged the USB end into the wall adapter of an iPhone charger to charge my Sony Xperia Z1C, TOOK 90 MIN FOR FULL CHARGE, go ahead, humor me. I don't care if it blows up, 8 hours to full charge? C'mon, perhaps because it's the international unlocked edition, wall adapter stated 5.0V stated.

A Z1C doesn't (or shouldn't) take 8hrs to charge even if the battery was depleted to 1%.

It's fact. The Z1 (as an example) will not draw more than 1.5A even if connected to a 2A output, or 0.5A if connected to a USB port (although some will detect "Fast Charge" USB ports and increase their amperage draw accordingly).

Your Sony charger is defective.

Voltage means nothing, other than 5V being the standard for mains-power (wall) chargers; it's the amperage that affects charging time, which iirc is 2A for the recent iPhone chargers. It makes no difference however... the Sony will not draw more than 1.5A @ 5V.

As an electrician that does electronics myself - I completely agree with @Slug on all points. Bad charger, doesn't matter if it's new or not. I've bought brand New starters and alternators for cars that were defective. It happens but is rare.
