DailyTech - Android-based Smartphones Outpaced Apple's iPhone in Q1 2010

Apple has a wakeup call as Android-based smartphones grab market share in Q1

DailyTech has been reporting on Google's meteoric rise in smartphone market share for quite some time now, but we didn't expect to hear the numbers that are coming from the NPD Group today with regards to Android's place in the hot sector. NPD says that unit sales for Android-based devices bolted past Apple iPhone devices for the first quarter in the U.S.

Well this is one phone vs. a whole bunch of different android based phones right? That's like saying, if you add up every car sold in 2009 that wasn't a Ford, then Ford got crushed.

Not quite, because the car analogy is hardware only. I can't think of a proper analogy using cars for this.

Apple is both a hardware and software company, and though their hardware (iPhone) is still the single best selling smartphone out there, their software (iPhone OS) is not and is now being surpassed by what is considered their major competitor (Android).

Is it Google's fault that Apple only releases one type of smart phone? :) Apple's fault for being way too exclusive, you shut out major portions of other customer bases that would love to have your product. For example, those who refuse to use AT&T, those who would like a hard keyboard, etc.

Apple has always been exclusive.... Nothing new here folks. Although I do think it's funny it took 4 domestic carriers and at least 6-7 models of phones to finally catch up with them.

Wait until mid June all your going to here is the new iPhone, this and that....

Competition is good and healthy, the iPhone forced many other companies and carriers to open up and adopt new ways to become competitive.

Verizon today is allowing things on our phones that I never ever thought would happen.. Long live the iPhone and competition it keeps everyone on their toes..

you have to give apple credit where it is due. but as was said above, Android OS is giving apple OS a beating. IMHO what is worth noting is not that androis is beating apple os,but rather that so many different manufacturers consider it to be such a good platform that they are adopting it. I have a nagging suspicion than in another year or two, Android will become the defacto standard OS for smart phones, not unlike what windows is for PCs. The biggest issue then, as I see it, will be trying to find a phone running on high end stock android, as opposed to one that's been douched up by a crappy proprietary interface over android (such as the horrible one used by Garmin).

Does anyone else think that Apple's newly created tablet market will soon follow?

How many people buying iPhones are new to iPhones though? There numbers are pretty staggering, but let's not forget that a lot of those phones they are selling are to the same people who bought the previous version 6 months prior.

The real number to look at is the number of people on the platform, not number of phones sold. I would guess that Android is picking up new platform users at a faster pace.

All this is Apples own fault. Currently apple still has the hardware lead only because there isnt one exclusive android phone. Its spread out. So right now Google's Android is slowly doing for smartphones what the Windows OS did for PC's. What that is exactly, is surpasing Apple and becoming number one. So to all the apple fans, this can all be stopped right now if Apple:
1) Stop being so Exclusive and let people have a choice with what carriers and what style phone they want. At&t works great some places but if you're in San Fransisco and you want an iPhone but your att service sucks there. You'll go for the next best thing wich is The Best smart phone on Verizon which has excellent service there. I say that as an example but even with the iPhone and Verizon's crazy dictatorship At&T is still only the number 2 carrier.
2) Androids ability to let you multi-task, create folders, have a combined inbox, have beautiful background wallpapers. Yes this is all going to be in iPhone 4.0 OS but why did it take for Android to already have all these features for Apple to finally want to give thiere own fans what they've been asking for, for years. Oh by the way apple fans dont think 4.0 is going to put an end to the talk about how android has all this stuff Apple cant do because developers already have the 4.0 OS and there is alot of complaints about how buggy and laggy it is. Its in Beta though so we'll see how things turn out in June.
3)Steves Jobs Dictatorship...nuff said
4) Finally Androids openess. Thanks to Android if I want to download something not in the Market Place I can do so, If I want a porn app I can do so, If I want an app that tethers I can do so, If I want an app that downloads music to my phone for free I can do so.

Nuff said!

Appls has always said that they care less about market share than they do about profits. There are only very rarely sales on iPhones, and you never see a BOGO. Either Verizon Wireless and/or Motorola/HTC have been eating some profit with the BOGOs and the sales on the Droid and Eris. And, of course, nearly everybody who wants an iPhone knows that a new model comes out every June or July, so I'd be willing to bet that Apple will be getting a lot of sales this summer quarter.

If Apple is crying over this news, they are crying all the way to the bank.

Dont get me wrong Apple knows how to make money but you gotta be honest. You cant honestly say you like the way apple has been acting lately. You're right though there market share is going to go back up when iPhone 4 comes out. No one knows how Android 2.2 looks or will do yet though so stay tuned.

I don't care how Apple acts; I just care about whether their products work for me, and I ignore the rest. Much of this "Apple acts" stuff is just spin from the media anyway.

Though, if one thing Apple does is use their market might to make Flash unimportant, then more power to 'em.

I use an Android phone in part because it is better for me to be using Verizon Wireless (though, now on Android, I'll likely not move to an iPhone, even if it comes to VZW - Android is great.) But nothing Apple "does" affects me, short of making great products that allow me to be more productive. Everything else is noise and bother.

Apple will have a looooooong fight to make Flash unimportant. As long as Adobe keeps tweaking the mobile/desktop flash, there'll be less of a reason for people to switch. And Apple losing market share isn't a good thing for their profits long term. If they keep losing it, they'll be forced to drop prices and you know low prices is like kryptonite to Apple.

It's one manufacturer against many. Like people here have already said, its surprising they lasted this long. The other thing people seem to be ignoring is that Apple has still outsold android by a massive amount in other countries (I think someone mentioned Japan as an example, around 70% iPhone population, look it up yourselves, I'm too lazy). It is nice to see Android is finally coming along in terms of marketshare in the US though, I myself am looking at getting a droid (or waiting for idroid for 3GS) because I'm really interested in testing android out long term.

I'm pretty sure it is HP or Dell that sell the most computers of any one manufacturer, not apple.

Can't find exact numbers. Apple is probably very very high-

Out of the top 50 best selling laptops as of November 2008- The Top 50 Best Selling Laptops

the top 15 had:
3 Toshiba's (Toshiba had the #1 selling laptop)
4 HPs (HP had the #2 highest selling laptop)
4 Apples (Apple had the #3 highest selling laptop)
3 Acers (their best was the #4 highest selling)
1 Dell (#12 being their highest).

I realize laptops is just a one sector of the PC market. Only thing I found on desktops was this- Top 3 Best-Selling Desktop Computers (As of August 2009)

August 2009, top 3 was Compaq (HP) at #1, Apple Mac Mini at #2 and Apple iMac at #3.

Sadly that is all I can find on this. Even if Apple is not #1, they are probably top 2-3, no doubt in the top 5.
