Galaxy S24 Series

I'm not as surprised by how much moved over and restored to the new phone as I am how much DIDN'T. I backed everything up to Google Backup and Samsung Cloud... but this was a surprisingly sparse restoration. It's going to take considerable time to recreate all this data.

My experience as well. Took two days to get it right. You'd think they'd have this figured out by now.

You'd think they'd have this figured out by now.

Hopefully the Samsung Members app will be flooded with feedback about how SmartSwitch is evidently not that smart. Samsung has had plenty of time to make sure this works. Perhaps if they reassigned all the people in the BIXBY division to work on SmartSwitch...

UPDATE:

After texting with Samsung Support, I was asked to redo Smart Switch: rather than use the app on each phone, another user in Samsung Members advised that I do a direct copy by going to Settings - Accounts and Backup - Transfer data for device setup. I set up the S23 Ultra as the sending device; the S24 Ultra as the receiving device; and let them sit near each other and transfer wirelessly. Worked like a charm.

Other than a couple of apps in which I had to do individual data backup/restore (by creating a backup file on the old phone, emailing it to myself, and opening it on the new phone), The only thing I don't have are my SMS/MMS messages*. Once I can get those restored, I'll be at 100%. Maybe then I can actually start playing around with this thing...

* - In reality, all the messages are there IF I use Samsung Messages as the default app. I don't... I prefer Textra. I would think that Textra can access the same data files containing all my messages, but apparently it doesn't.

hmmm... I think I'll wait a bit before upgrading. Right now I'm still on a S10+, hadn't needed to move on since it's a trusty device for many years and continued to get updates. Finally the battery is reaching its elderly days and I'm hoping to get a few bucks on trade. But I have a 128GB SD and will have to plan how to move the filesystem from it while transferring to a new unit.
Was hoping Smart Switch would handle that.

Good luck. I still haven't figured out the way Samsung decides trade-in value. Last year, my SGN8 had a trade in value of $50 for the S23U. Now the trade-in value for the SGN8 is $400 for the S24U! I decided to trade in my SGN8 and keep my S22U as the new spare.

Looks like Samsung is placing $200 as the value of my S10+ and my wife's S10, it's more than I expected for being 5 versions back

UPDATE:

Seeing that Samsung Messages can display all my thousands of text messages, I uninstalled Textra and set Messages as my default. I then rebooted the phone, reinstalled Textra and then selected it as default. It now displays all my thousands of text messages... and I can disable the Samsung app again. Huzzah! I think I'm pretty much moved in and can start the ebay listing for the S23 Ultra!

My brother-in-law could not hold out for trusted reviews and ordered his S24. Original delivery scheduled for 2/1. It was then updated to 2/2 and today reported lost in transit. He said after hassling another is to be shipped in three business days. He was asking me if the phone was registered to him and the likely theft be tracked? My answer and strictly a guess, the phone will legally be owned by whoever goes through the initial setup and google login / registration. Even though Sammy likely has the serial # and IMEI of the phone shipped to him, I can't imagine it be in anyway earmarked as his until that setup. I was asked to confirm that and told him someone here would certainly know. Thanks for your thoughts.

I messed around with AI just to see what kind of fun stuff I could make, Not that I'd take credit or anything, but I did find one hilarious abuse of it, creating furries....

That and it could make some neat looking deer pictures.

I think the fun ended the instant someone posted a Bing AI-created photo of mickey mouse and 9/11 terrorism

OK that is just absolutely wrong and very creepy

@olbriar I can't imagine Samsung holding your BIL accountable for a phone that is reported lost in transit by the shipper. It's proof that he literally never got it. No doubt the IMEI is flagged and will be blacklisted if & when it's ever activated. It's a shame that he has to wait as long as I did. UPS did a crap job on the shipment, allowing a 2nd Day Air package to sit in a facility ten miles away for THREE DAYS when it arrived in plenty of time to be put on a truck. Hopefully Sammy will go back to FedEx after this little exercise.

Example: I don't use Samsung Messages... I use Textra for my messages. While I was able to restore my SMS/MMS messages to the default app, Textra is BLANK. It's almost as if Samsung and Google are trying to make it as inconvenient as possible for users who choose alternative apps - but I can't prove that.
I use a free (you can donate) app called SMS Backup & Restore for my messages. I schedule it once a week to do automatic backups to Google Drive and I have restored it perfectly twice so far. All I do is put the program on another phone and import the data (phone calls and texts).

Duckster, I've used that app for years and it has helped ensure I migrate my SMS texts forward through a half dozen phone changes.

AWESOME! I guess I'm dating myself by admitting that I know who Siskel' n Ebert are, and that I loved their reviews. Now if you know who Dr. Demento is, you're right up there with me!

I scoured the appstore for a good message backup program. None of them fit the bill except SMS Backup & Restore. The previous SMS Backup that I used was discontinued.

Thanks Chief! I told him he had no reason to fear but he wanted another opinion. He made the purchase with a credit card that he can dispute the draft if necessary. It's the first time he's ever bought a phone without going to Best Buy or his provider. He's nervous and upset.
If he wants a little more peace of mind and a little more proof, have him contact Samsung on their website using the "Chat With An Agent" support option. He can ask them about it there and get it all in writing. He can print that out, or screenshot it for additions proof, but I'm pretty sure he won't need it. Peace of mind is always a good thing to have.

I never missed a weekend! Every Saturday night at 9 PM, I was in my room getting my brain mangled by the Dr. Demento Show! (I also watched UFO and Space:1999 when they were first broadcast on our UHF channel... and TV when it was only black & white. In fact, every Sunday evening we'd walk down to my grandparents' house to marvel at the Wonderful World of Disney on their 25" color console television. Now I'm dating myself...)

Chief, you're being too modest. It's ok to admit that you were a huge fan of "Fibber McGee and Molly":ROFLMAO:

Uh, no... I watched the original Batman show. And Sigmund and the Sea Monsters
:)

Okay, now that we've gone WAY off topic, let's get back to the S24! I'm smitten with the screen brightness, which was one reason I bought it. It's almost blinding indoors at full brightness! Calls are clear, things are responsive, and all the Good Lock modules I've used (so far) work.

I remember when the nexus 6 came out, the wife order it the day or within a few days of being to pre-order it. Mine didn't arrive until the end of January, maybe the first week of February.
I have the S23 ultra with Verizon.
I am able to get the S24 ultra with Google Fi.
But I am not going to.
Google Fi is my secondary emergency back up phone (I currently using the Motorola G power 2022.) I can sometimes go a whole month without using it. Ordering the S24 ultra would be a major waste of money.

Why don't you put both cellular accounts on one phone? I have both Google Fi and AT&T on my Pixel 8.

I have two different accounts because of my job (truck driver) while Verizon covers about 98-99% of the country (America) there are a few areas it doesn't, that's where Google Fi comes in. I also keep separate phones just in case my main one goes out.
Speaking of AT&T. There's section of Utah and Nevada where AT&T is the primary service provider, Verizon, T-mobile and Even Google Fi don't work or aren't exactly reliable in certain parts of those states.

If Samsung deliberately made the Vivid screen mode look just like the Natural screen mode, why is it even an option???

OhMyGosh! I have never known of anyone else who remembered UFO! The Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence Organization (SHADO) who defended earth! Space 1999 with Martin Lando was also excellent! I remember putting my old cassette recorder next to the radio and hitting "play and record" at the same time to tape Shirley & Squirey, and Guitarzan and his Jungle Band"

Glad to hear you like the colors on the S24 Ultra. Question... Do you have a screen protector on it, and if you do, does it interfere in any way with the anti-glare of the screen? I've already got the lens protectors, so now I just need a case. I'll probably get the Otterbox Defender Pro if it works with a screen protector (peace of mind). The Ultra should be here by the end of Feb if not sooner.

It's your lucky day: here are all 26 episodes

We also have both seasons of Space:1999 on Blu-ray, remastered in high definition and it looks incredible!

I use ArmorSuit Military Shield matte film screen protectors because (a) they work great and (b) have a lifetime warranty. If one messes up, I submit a claim, pay for postage and they send me another one. The screen itself is glare-resistant but I really can't tell a dramatic difference.
