Help II8 firmware? Do you have it? We need it :)

I used unyaffs in the end. I still have no idea why restoring the system.img isnt enough :-/ Anyway you'll need the custom recovery, either 4.1 or 4.2 doesnt matter.

- Copy the system.img onto the root of your sdcard (mount it in windows, and drop it over)

- Boot into recovery

- open an adb shell
# adb shell

- remount system read/write
# mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock1 /system

- erase the system partition
# rm -rf /system/*

- Extract the system image:
# cd /system/
# unyaffs /sdcard/system.img

The boot images are identical, so there's no need to flash that over. You probably want to do a factory reset first to clear out your data partition etc. You can take a nandroid backup first of course in case you want to revert back.

- remount system read/write
# mount -o rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock1 /system

Ok I've had a try a doing this and I got device in use errors. So I found that if I did this first before the command above, the rest of it worked:-

Code:
umount /dev/block/mtdblock1
Also while removing /system it complained it could not remove lost+found. I then continued with the unyaffing of system.img which completed with no error.

I've got the system back up and running and had a look at build.prop file and it does mention II8 so it looks like I've got it up and running.

You always need to do the remount since its mounted read only. You need the recovery console because rm -rf /system/* on the running system is not wise!

Just a quick question here from a potential android and galaxy buyer (me:p):

All these commands remind me strongly about linux commands, and in regards to rooting a phone I was wondering how/where you are practically typing them, as in:

1: Do you somehow hack the phone, get a shell so you can write those commands there, straight on the phone?

or

2: You have the phone connected to your computer, and use some sort of program to remotely issue these commands on the phone?

Sorry bout the offtopic post from a newbie ;) hope you don't mind.

The main advanatge of the galaxy is that its not security locked. That means you can always root it easily by modifying the stock recovery, and flashing it on the device. You can also upgrade/downgrade firmware at will.

HTC devices are usually security locked, and so you usually need an exploit to root them.

ADB aka Android Debugging Bridge or something like that.

It's a program in the android sdk that allows you to do nifty stuff with either an android emulator or an android device. Things like putting and getting files on the phone... opening a shell. If you do get an android phone, very likely you'll end up using it if you know that it even exists. It's also used in debugging programs on your phone. Seems like in 2.0, they added profilling features to help you optimise your apps. I really would love to get that.

I just read this thread again and noticed i totally missed what you meant. Yeah i had a typo, it should be rw,remount :)

Edited the post!

Also yeah the lost and found thing is fine, ignore it

Is there any update on the II8 firmware?

Have there been any discoveries of improvements? I must admit, I'm using II5 + Galaxhero, and I've noticed a few problems, such as:

1) it's turning itself on and off again
2) it drops text messages sometimes (I didn't get all the footy results through last night - i recieved one text out of six)
3) sometimes the screen decides to not respond
4) infrequently, the call end button decides not to respond

4) infrequently, the call end button decides not to respond

This could be an hardware fault. I had to return my first phone for this (call, hangup and menu button sometimes not responding).

And otherwise, Galaxyhero is totally not worth it. It's quite a bit slower then II5 and H8. The only nice part is the default root acces and some of the ui looks.

I would like to see the II8 extracted though, shouldn't be too hard with all the nordics having this firmware?

Really? Can't say I've noticed it being slower... unless you enable compcache that is.

Compcache doesn't give any advantage indeed. But for me, whenever I come back from an memory intensive app it takes much more time to get the icons back on the homescreen (I don't have widgets) and bigger apps like the browser launch slower.

Also there are 3 useless apps in Galaxyhero with the worst being Quickdroid which is always using between 20-50% cpu. My battery life has also become worse because of this. (see this link: http://androidforums.com/samsung-i7500/12127-galaxhero-rom-slower-than-thought.html)
