HTC EVO as a modem?

Roadblock

I have a Samsung Instinct that I've enabled PAM on. I don't use this much but sometimes for work I need to snag something when I'm out and about on the road. Unfortunate, I use it so little, I could never justify paying for one of Sprints card. None the less, I use it 2 or 3 times a month for 10 or 15 minutes.

Am I going to be able to do this with the EVO? I know they have some Wifi stuff you can pay for for like $30 a month but I just can't justify that. I need to know before I pick up my EVO tomorrow. I might need to hold out and wait if I can't.

Thanks.

Well, see I know you can DO it but like on my Samsung Instinct, I had to call up Sprint and get MCL code then get into the program menu and turn on this feature.

Now I can tether my phones and check emails, grab files from work etc on my laptop using my Samsung Instinct as a portable modem, no extra fee's.

I'm just worried I'm going to LOOSE this ability with the EVO because sprint wants $29.99 a month for this. For as little as I use it, I'm not paying $29.99 a month for it.

I could really care less about being able to use the phone as a wifi hotspot, as long as I can tether with the USB cord, I prefer that anyway because the phone gets power off the cord at the time time.

Just checking ahead of time.

The wifi hotspot is $29.99. The USB tethering is included in your $10 monthly EVO tax, um fee.

This is something official Sprint is offering/doing?

If this is the case, I don't feel do um, shammed paying the $10 dollars. I mean if I gotta pay it anyway, at least I don't have to screw with unlocking the phone etc.

The *Sprint* wifi hotspot app is $29.99 per month. There are other applications that do the same thing for free or cheap. Just like the $1.99 ringtones carriers used to sell, you pay more when you don't search for alternatives. They can charge what they want but it's not the only option.

I just phoned Sprint to get the Evo I was given at the Google Developer Conference and I was told that tethering will be disabled on all phones within a couple of weeks unless you pay $29.99 which covers the HotSpot feature and tethering. The $10 charge has nothing to do with tethering - that's the additional charge for 4G.

$59.99 for 500 minutes and unlimited Internet (discounted $10 for Google Dev attendees)
$10 for 4G surcharge
$29.99 for HotSpot and Tethering! Unbelievably expensive in my opinion.

I told the guy there was no way I'd pay $100 a month for one phone, no matter how good the phone is. I'm likely to stick with my Droid at about $75 a month which includes tethering.

Yes I use PDA Net: works well. The guy at Sprint specifically said that they will be disabling tethering in the next couple of weeks, after which you will have to pay $29.99 which, in my opinion is totally over the top as far as price. He said that because some of their customers are paying $60 for dedicated laptop Sprint modems, this is a 'good deal' and many are switching to the Evo to save $30.

Pdanet is wireless tethering htc offers wired tethering free it's built in, when you plug a micro usb from a computer it gives you the option:share this phone's mobile network with PC.

They said from the beginning that the hot spot feature would be free the first month and then disabled unless you pay for it. Tethering is a word thrown about haphazardly.Tethering enables users to go online from their laptops or PDAs in situations where there's no other means of Internet access: when there's no wi-fi hotspot available. They are disabling the wifi hotspot feature!

Well then I guess I must have been misinformed by the guy at Sprint. I'm going to leave it for a couple of weeks to see how this pans out before giving up my Verizon Droid in favor of the Evo - I guess $70 is in the ballpark but there is no way I'll pay $100 for one phone, no matter how stunningly beautiful and feature-rich it is. Incidentally when I was down in Mountain View the other day, I tried tethering to my laptop over the 4G network using PDANet and got speeds 3.8MB/s download and 0.88 MB/s upload (pretty impressive).
