Memo app?

Hi all,

I'm a Palm refugee who is looking for some sort of memo app for storing dozens of snippets of miscellaneous information. My research so far suggests that my (seemingly modest) list of essential requirements isn't ticked by any existing application, I guess I'm just posting to get confirmation of this, or to see whether I'm missing something!

Two requirements:

- ability to sync with something, so that most of the maintenance of the memos could be done on a keyboard and proper screen. Ideally I'd rather this was a desktop application on my own PC for privacy, but it seems like an attachment to privacy marks me out as some sort of relic of a bygone era, so I'm prepared to compromise on cloud synchronisation.

- ability to export memos in a form which is reasonably transportable, eg a CSV file. Again, call me hopelessly old-fashioned, but I would no more put all my data into an application which has no exit route than I'd put all my money into a bank which doesn't like customers to make withdrawals.

As I say this doesn't seem unduly demanding, but I think current technology is some way behind my brief shopping list. I suppose I'd quite like the ability to import Palm memos (from a CSV file), but I've given up on making such demands and I'd be prepared to spend the evening cutting and pasting by hand for the right app!

In short, as far as I can see, Evernote ties you into some bizarre database of their own with no way out, Note Everything has no sync or export facility, and nor does 3banana. So it looks like I'll be carrying my Palm around unless someone can tell me differently!

Well being a palm lover since handspring days I had similar needs. Look and feel was also in my list of needs. Four apps have entered my life that come close
1) SpringPad great online in the cloud notes catch all with android app.

2) Jorte - this comes so close to the palm memo calendar and a todo only all in one. This sucker also has the added bonus of import CSV ;-}

3) CheckMarks - and awesome ToDo tool, a life saver for me.

4) uNote - only the best notes app around for the android.

I believe that the second in my list will hit your palm needs. Also nice to note they are all free.

Thanks for the ideas Frank, I do appreciate your suggestions. For a moment I got quite excited until I tried them out!

Again, maybe I'm just unrealistically fussy, but none of them actually have the basic functionality which I outlined above.

Jorte looks like it could turn out well one day, but currently has no way of syncing memos that I can see.

Springpad has the same approach as Evernote, which sets alarm bells ringing in my head: they both love you to put your data into them, and sell themselves on how easy it is to capture information. They're much more coy about what happens if, after you've stored your whole life on their servers, you want to get the information out and take it somewhere else! In short, no export facility. To make it worse, Springpad looks to me like it may be setting itself up to sell you stuff. There are preset categories for notes on wines, books, etc, and then connections with websites that sell these things.

Unote looks to me like a triumph of form over funtionality, with very little functionality!

I am grateful for you taking the time to flag these up to me, but I guess I'm going to be carrying that Palm around in my shirt pocket for quite a while yet!

I've been using Easy Note + 2do.

It's pretty good and it syncs to Google Docs. The only problem is that if you enter the notes on Google Docs, I can't seem to get the C/R's to stick, so you have to go through and reformat them on the phone. Once you do that, however, it seems to work OK. It will also export each note to a .txt file on the SD card. It won't import from text however.

I am also a former palm die hard. I would like to find a memo app that syncs with google documents. One that has a password would be great too. Note everything has a lot....but no sync with desktop. Anything new out there?

I was rocking a Palm TX before switching to Android, so I feel your pain. Until Evernote get off their asses and give us offline notes, the best I can suggest it Note Everything. It is very close to using the Memo feature on Palm (Folders, sub-folders, notes), and it can export to your SD card as plain TXT files, as well as import from the SD card.

So you could try this:

1. Install NoteEverything.

2. (Assuming you are using a PC with Windows XP or better) install the SyncToy app from Microsoft on your PC. Download details: SyncToy 2.1

You can use SyncToy to sync the text files in the folder on your SD card to a folder on your PC. Then you can edit on your PC (since they are regular text files), Sync back to the SD card, and import back in to NoteEverything.

Not very elegant, I know, but until Evernote gives us offline access to notes on the phone, that's the best I can think of.

Now to be clear, I use both NoteEverything and SyncToy, but I have never actually used them as I've outlined above (just never got round to it. Perhaps I'll give it a shot this weekend). In theory it should work.

I was a palm user for 10 years and made the switch to Android two months ago.

I have adopted the following: Calengoo (synchronizes google calendar and google tasks; I also sync the google calendar onto Pimlical on my desktop just in case the cloud disappears); ColorNote (for simple notes and reminders); DropBox (for larger memos, documents, photos, etc; I can just use MS Word (on desktop) and ThinkFree (on phone) to edit files; everything gets synced on both phone, cloud and desktop(s)). First, everyone forgive me. I know that this is an old thread, but I always go back and read old threads when I join a board. It helps save me from asking previously answered questions.

Anyway, I don't know if you found a solution, but have you tried Epistle? You can sync it to Dropbox, edit on your computer and sync back.

Every thing that you write in Epistle is automatic as far as new edits go, device to computer. But, when you want to edit a note through your computer, you just open up the note, make your changes, save and exit the note. You can set your syncing preferences within Epistle.

I don't know of any other note applications that have two way syncing that would fit your requirements, but that's mainly because I stopped looking with Epistle.

I don't know. I have never tried. I don't use Google Docs. It's free with no ads. It's in the Android Market. I first found it on a suggestion that it was small and could sync with DropBox.

To add notes from the computer, you just open up Notepad, (Windows) make the note and save it in the Epistle folder. Perhaps, it will do the same with GDocs?
