how to send tex message from moto droid?

I id a search, and the results were wide, varied and not to my point, so no I am asking the veterans.

I would like to know how to initiate a text message on my Motorola droid. If I click the messaging icon on my home screen it takes me to gmail. if i open my phone and contacts, i get the email address and phone number displayed only, no option to text the desired contact


the only thing i seem to grasp is the call log. from there i can text or call again. seems like i can only text from call log, but if i have no call to tor from them in my log, and i want to text them, i do not know how.

is there a good tutorial for texting and contacts?

sorry if it seems like a dumb question, i just got my droid a couple hours ago. i am stokes because it was a sweet deal and i am not due to upgrade from my lame omnia for awhile. but i need to know how to text and initiate calls instead of just emailing everyone. the phone is sick sweet though.

omg. i figured it out. the little smiling droid icon on the side is the text icon. sick i tell you. droids are sic. i am gonna leave this up in case anyone else is as dumb as me.

Guessing you are new. Yeah might take a little getting used to.

You should look into downloading Handcent. It is one of the most popular SMS clients for Android, I prefer it. You might too.

I guess I'm in the same boat.....I just purchased the Anroid Motor...first smartphone. I figured out how to text, but I still have two questions...

1) Is there an easy way tot send a text to multiple people?
2) Is there a way to set up "groups" without downloading a new app. Using the text program that comes with the phone?

My wife has the Moto Droid. She is using the standard messaging, using ShoutOut to do messaging by voice. I can tell you that the messages I receive from her are perfect! I have ShoutOut on my Incredible, but have yet to try it myself. My wife says that ShoutOut beats the hell out of both her slide-out keyboard and her virtual keyboard.

text to multiple is easy,
step 1 compose new
step 2 type the first few leters of a contact and the select the appropriate contact
step 3 the curser should still be in the to box so keep typing the first few letter of the next contact etc.

as for groups, you set up groups in your gmail and they sink with your phone. i have not messed with that a lot yet but i plan to do more with that.

i have to say hands down, this is the best phone i have ever owned. i have had a few ms based smart phones over the years and they all fall short on the productivity side, my first plam pilot did more and performed better. and then a year ago when i had to replace my broken and no longer made one, i was greatly disappointed with the lack of easily accessible micro sd slot given that you had to have outlook to get data off the phone directly. but this droid, i can find no significant shortcomings and it reads as a local drive when plugged into any pc or mac, no outlook required, i love it.

Be sure to read the text under the icons. Messaging is the SMS/MMS app. Email and Gmail should pretty clearly indicate what they do.

In contacts, click on the photo and you'll see the various options available for that contact (call, message, email, map).

People seem to frequently forget about the long press as well. In the context of this thread, long press on a contact and you'll also get a menu with options. The long press is used in many other places as well.

Don't be afraid to play around!

Again, consider Handcent or another non-stock SMS/MMS app. I found Handcent a bit easier for selecting multiple recipients for SMS/MMS.

This is another trend that I've noticed with a lot Android newbies. Don't be afraid to use non-stock apps, especially if the stock apps don't seem to have a feature you need/want or don't work the way you want. Consider your Android device to be more like your desktop PC. Do you use only the apps that came with the OS on your PC? Don't be afraid to make the most of Android and to extend its capabilities. That's part of the whole point of it (IMO).

Definitely check out the Apps subforum for ideas and suggestions. You'll find yourself completely frustrated if you decide to just browse through the Market.

I think I entered a group I would like to sync to my contacts. I went to Gmail, add the people within the group, now what? How do I get it to my phone?
