Help Picture Quality HTC Desire

Hi All,

I have just upgraded to the HTC Desire on T-Mobile and am experiencing some problems with image quality be it through browsing the internet in gerenal or even when looking at my images through facebook etc.

All the images seem to be pixelated and are not as crisp when I compare it against say my i-touch. I realise it will be different on differnet phones but I know the images should not be looking like this.

I took it straight back to T-Mobile shop I got it from and they did acknowledge that the images were unclear and pixelated but they said it was not a known fault with HTC or with T-Mobile. They gave me a brand new replacement and its happening on this handset too. Its a bit disappointing as effects the overall browsing experience.

I called HTC and they said that should not be happening and they said they hadn't heard of that fault but would collect it to look at it.

THe thing is I have had two Desire handsets now and its happening on both so was wondering if anyone knows what the problem is and how I can fix this?

Have you tried the Dolphin HD browser?
its free on the market.

try that and see if the images are the same.

I did try that and it's still the same.

in the browser I entered "images of paris" and the first image that comes up is a picture of the Eifel Tower the thumbnail itself is pixelated, particularly, the blue sky and when you click into it the sky isn't sharp. This is just one example, I have checked a few websites and its the same.

The facebook application also brings up unclear pictures. Also, if you sync your FB pictures to your contacts the pictures and awful too.

Web images may well be compressed by your service provider, causing them to look less than pristine. Is the problem simply with Web images or do the sample images in your photo gallery app or the pictures produced by the camera also look bad? Which network are you on?

Its web images, the sample pictures are crystal clear. For example, there is a sample image of a boy on skateboard and even when you zoom in you do not lose any quailty but if I were to do that on images say on my facebook it just gets worse.

I am on T-Mobile...

Right - I'm on T-Mobile as well. If I view the full size Eiffel Tower image in the default browser when connected to mobile data, there are clear signs of compression (pixellation and banding). If I switch to Wifi and refresh the image, it comes up looking much cleaner. Moral of the story - Wifi is much better for viewing photos on the Web than via mobile data.

I did a test from home looking at FB images (Wi-Fi vs Mobile Network) and the pixelation was still there.

I've just gone onto skysports.com and bbc news using the mobile web network and the images on that are not as clear as they should be - I take the point about Wi-Fi but small images such as pictures on bbc news or sky sports should still be clear.

I used to have a Sony Erricson C902 (very old phone) and web browsing on that phone was clearer - yikes!

If someone used mobile data to update their photos on Facebook, they may be uploading compressed images, maybe - but I think the mobile network compression is primarily for viewing photos, not uploads. This interests me as I run several websites on digital photography (e.g. www.dpnow.com) so I will undoubtedly be exploring the potential pitfalls of digital imaging and mobile data networks!

All my images were uploaded on my home PC - the images were taken using a digital SLR and they are very clean images.

As the pictures on websites are also not sharp I am wondering if there is a fault with HTC Desire and viewing images over the the internet?

I have an Apple i-touch and when I view my images over wi-fi on Facebook they are clear and no pixelation but when I do the same on HTC Desire it's pixelated even before I zoom...

Arrgh - it's driving me to drink.

Well, I'm relaxed about it - the photos like fine when viewed over wifi, compressed when viewed over mobile data.

It's most likely the mobile operator tampering with the images in real time before they are sent to your phone. For the sake of a little extra compression (and poorer PQ) on the fly, you will be downloading less data from the internet.

It will be technically possible for the mobile ISP to determine your browser's screen resolution and use this information to tailor dynamic compression accordingly.

Do you mean the moire pattern that's slightly visible on all images (especially photos as seen on Facebook etc)?

I *think* I read somewhere that this was something to do with AMOLED screens not using blue sub-pixels to improve the life of the screen overall....ah here it is:

Not sure what you mean by moire pattern but I have a crystal clear picture that was taken (SLR Camera) on a beach showing white sands, the sea and clear blue sky. When I look at the picture through my HTC Desire via FB be it WI-FI or Mobile network, the sand is pixelated and the blue sky is not sharp (showing pixels) I have flciked through other pictures and its the same thing.

Same thing on other websites....

I can't comment on your albums but contact sync is a known issue. Regardless of the quality of the original phone contact picture, it ends up on the phone in thumbnail form after the sync process. Thumbnails, being low resolution, show up all blurry when they are enlarged, e.g. when you receive a call.

Picture quality it desire is shit. I was using desire to watch live world cup match in the office today and so was a friend of mine he was using iPhone 3gs. I was so embarrassed. While I was getting shit pixated picture where you could not even see the players properly she was getting HD quality picture. I have just realised that my anti iPhone feeling may not be justified. Desire may be the last HTC phone I buy.

Based on the link, does anyone have the answer if you sync contacts through Outlook and how you get high quality picture contacts?

My two cents on this issue,

I think you will find it is a t mobile problem - when my fiancee had a mobile broadband package with them there was a piece of software on her laptop that was t-mobile provided and it did something to do with image quality/load times. It had an auto setting but you could also slide it whichever way to suit you.

I have 2 t-mobile lines both with unlimited internet and don't have any picture problems on my phone but I know this was a setting with the mobile broadband so perhaps its a sim card issue?

I would give t-mobile a call and explain it to them

Changing the picture to high quality is done through camera then settings. However, this doesn'tsolve the problem as this is settings for when you actually take a picture on the camera phone not for image settings for browsing or contact sync pictures. Anyone know an answer tu the Outlook question because it does work but it just keeps duplicating when I sync even i link, might be doing it wrong. Also, when it says add a photo to the new contact, does that mean I need to transfer my pics from my pc? If so, isn't it quicker to just add the picture to the contact?! I started adding pics to Outlook then sync, the pics were awful even though they were high resolution I then followed the instructions in the above link but when I sync again it worked but left that contact you had to create on Outlook but was linked on the phone.
