Why such a bad rap?

Why is the LG Ally getting such a bad rap? I recently picked up this phone and I think it's pretty great! It's not as powerful as other handsets, but what more can you expect for a $50 phone (with two year agreement from Verizon)?

I noticed a lot of the Android community websites don't even recognize it on their forums as an Android "device." What's up with that? Any other Ally users here?








NOTE: I DO have to admit, this is my first Android handset.

Not everyone wants/needs a high end device.

However, picking a phone is a matter of finding whatever suits you best. If the LG Ally works for you, great. If not, great.

Again, depends on what you're looking for. If the modding community and lack of an add-on UI matter to you (theoretically faster Android updates) then the Droid would be more for the price or less (from resellers anyway).

It is exciting if you think of the big picture. Android makes the 4.3" 1 ghz superphone possible but it also enables lots of really cheap phones so that everyone can have a real browser and apps available to them at all times.

That's true. Samsung is putting Android on one of their models hailing from a line which formerly is known for being all-featurephones. On the other hand, cheap low-specced phones won't give you the full Android experience, and may even be laggy/shoddily done, which can skew the user's perception of the OS. In a way, it'll become a little like Symbian: it's everywhere, on low-end, mid-end, and high-end. Except with better UI and app selection, obviously. (Oh lordy, Symbian^3 looks so unfortunate. Like the red-headed stepchild of mobile OSes.)

It'll gain Android market share like nobody's business, though.

I think its a nice little device.

3.2" WVGA 800x480 resolution. That sounds pretty crazy, would like to see that in person.
And 600MHz on a 3.2" device should be pretty quick/snappy (like the Aria)

Exactly. Besides, shouldn't a community for such a relatively new OS be especially welcoming to any and all players?

Hey, I haven't seen anything about it until today, but judging from this video review it looks like a very nice device! In some ways, it's better than the Desire I just bought: I was actually on the lookout for an Android phone with a physical landscape keyboard (I just loathe how the on-screen keyboard totally replaces the app UI); it's got its SD card slot in a place where you don't have to take the whole thing apart; the 3MP camera is really plenty for my needs; and the OS customisation seems very gently done (I like that there's a car dash app, and the Home screen even rotates!); and finally there are physical and separate Call and End buttons and the Dialer looks actually useable (learn, HTC!). Oh, and I bet it would have cost me much less...

I got my LG Ally a week ago and I can say that I am totally happy with it. I do not seem to have the same battery life problems that were reported. I keep almost ererything off unless I need it and do not spend much time on either phone calls or the Internet. I have downloaded 13 applications, but do not use them all that much. Three of them are notepads and I am trying to find the best one for my needs. I will uninstall the others when I find the right one. My battery lasted for two days.

I hope that the Ally is sucessful because it is a nice working phone. It may not be the fastest nor the flashiest one out there, but it suits my needs and the price can't be beat for the features

See that's the problem with everyone. They expect to leave pandora, wifi, gps, bluetooth, and the kitchen sink on, and still expect to receive 3 days of battery life.

1. Most people interested in modding phones get high end devices
2. It hasn't had the sales of other phones on the same network (Droid, Droid Eris & Droid Inc.)
3. Most people with a mid-low end smart phone aren't going to go join forums for it.

I think if #3 changed then it would get more coverage.

I think the #1 (development community) is directly related to #2.

It is only available on 1 network, can only work in 1 country. This same network has the Droid/Droid Incredible and going to be releasing Droid X/Samsung Galaxy/Droid 2 in the near future. Developers who use Verizon would be more inclined to get any of the above mentioned phones than the Ally (especially with the Droid hugely discounted now).

Also Verizon did not market this phone as aggressively as they did their other Android phones. I saw one commercial and it looked more like a commercial for Iron Man II. They did not highlight the WVGA display or the Android 2.1 OS, they were highlighting messaging and multimedia (which feature phones can deliver without a smartphone plan).

I don't think it is a bad rap for the Ally, more like no rap. I am sure it is a nice snappy device with a good keyboard, probably one of the best entry-level smartphones out there but given how loaded the smartphone lineup is for the carrier it is on and how poorly it was marketed (from a carrier which has been aggressively marketing Android phones), it never did pick up popularity.
