Best Android alternative to Desire? Any opinions?

Hi,
I love my Desire, but the massive receptions problems, unreliable bluetooth, and other problems and bugs are making me consider alternatives.
I will wait for Froyo in the hope that it fixes the problems. If not I will be exchanging the Desire for something else on Orange UK network.

So what are worthwhile competitors to the Desire (Android OS of course).

Will the HTC EVO be available? Are the Samsung Galaxy or Sony X10 be viable alternatives?

Any good suggestions for other phones (excluding the Nexus One) that could match up to the Desire without having such a large number of bugs/problems?

The x10 still runs on android 1.6 and its laggy. I wouldn't recommend it. They initially said 2.1 would be available September this year but I don't know if they will change to 2.2 or what now

Samsung Galaxy S over the X10 any day, but personally, i'd still say stick with the Desire.

Galaxy S is your best bet with what's about so far.

The Dell Streak is nice but still on 1.6. If they release 2.2 when you change, that might be worth a go.

Friend at works got the x10. She's had loads of problems with it. Think she's on her third one!

Hopefully 2.2 will solve all problems. If not then will take a look at the Galaxy.

I for one am pretty happy with my Desire. On the other hand, my Galaxy (the i7500 one, not the later models) was an utter piece of rubbish.

If you look into that subforum, you'll find a great number of bitter users who wouldn't choose Samsung again. Proceed at your own peril.

I sometimes wish I'd have gone for the Milestone. I know the Desire has better spec, but I honestly believe it's the OS that's the bottleneck nowadays, not the handsets.

My next Android handset won't be a HTC device I don't think.

I was thinking about the droid/milestone before I heard about the leaked bravo. definitely liek the idea of a physical keyboard, especially after coming from a blackberry, but the spec is pretty low.

Also, almost every app I read reviews for on teh market says "Doesn't work - Moto Droid"

I liked the idea of android, but if windows phone series 7 was actually out on handsets at the time, I would have had a real battle on my my hands.

I think the Droid compatibility issues are down to it's weird screen size.

To expand: my next Android device will be one that's popular in the US. Why? Because they have really embraced Android and all the development that's done seems to centre around their chosen handsets. I also really like the Moto stuff - just a shame it seems to be centred on verizon

But I do wonder when we'll see the Evo and Droid X in the UK - and the sort of montly plan fee's they'll command. 4.3 and 5" screens are lovely, but a bit too big on a phone imo.

EVO? Probably never (the 4g aspect would be wasted on us, and by the time we've caught up the EVO will be old news)
Droid X? Well, we don't have the network to run that over here (CDMA?). At the launch they said that there may be a comparable device for the rest of the world, but it would be renamed.

The devices are way in advance of the OS at this time. The apps and the UI need a kick in the arse to catch up.

As far as screen size goes, I'm more anxious that they find a sweet spot for the resolution so devs aren't being overworked trying to overcome compatibility problems.

After all - evo and incredible have same res - just different sized screens - easy!

I'm in a similar situation, upgrading my phone next month to either a desire or galaxy s, but with the complaints i've read about the desires build quality and reception issues, i think i'll be getting a galaxy s - which is soon to be released on Orange, according to the Orange website. Apart from it's foibles, the desire is still a great device. Maybe the S will mark a turning point for samsung? They might get their act together and actually provide full support for their products from here on?

I will agree with this, someone at work was moaning about their old Samsung. My last phone was the Soul and while it was okay it only just lasted my contract.

Basically the camera for voice chat stopped working, the soft metal bit of the back of the phone was scratched (in fact the first week I had it there where scratches on it) and about a month before my Desire a huge 5cm crack appeared on it. I hadn't treated it any worse than any of my other phones and they all where in pretty good nick a year or two down the line.

I had a Sony before the Samsung and apart from having to replace the charger (because sony love their convoluted interfaces) I had no such issues and the phone was almost in a mint condition.

I would rather take an X10 with the old OS (from what I have seen of it) that put my money on the Galaxy it seems to peform better with the sunlight as well.

Though you would have to prise the Desire of my cold dead corpse first.

droid 2 may be a good alternative if you find droid x too huge. looks great with a much better qwerty over the old milestone/droid.
