Help Battery Being Weird, Shows As Charging But Going Down And Down!

My USB cable was being a bit erratic (not appearing to make a good connection unless I wiggled it to and fro) so I changed it to a newer cable. Still difficult to get the red (charging) light to come on, but it's currently charging up, via AC adapter/USB lead.

But, even with the battery icon "moving" on the display and the red light on, my battery indicator is going down, and down.

Thought it might be the HTC battery finally giving up the ghost, so I took the battery out and put it back in, rebooted..still the same.

So I tried inserting a new battery; it's doing the exact same thing.

Battery Status says: Display 92%, Screebl Pro 4%, Cell Standby 2% and Android OS 2%.

Earlier (with the older, HTC battery) I got an error I've never seen before: "Your phone is using more current than the charger is able to deliver. Please power off your phone or close unused applications."
...I rebooted and the battery still drained!

Haven't had this error message with the new battery.

What's the culprit here, the USB lead? The Micro USB slot? The battery? Why is it showing as charging when it's not? Any suggestions welcome :)

Hmm, next step might to check the current which the phone uses while in stand-by ... and to measure the charging current.

An easy way to do this is installing Battery Monitor Widget.
The app measures the battery's current and show it in graph by time.

In stand-by (without charging) a DHD shouldn't have more than -100mA.
While charging (20% up to 50%) the current should be about +600mA to +800mA.

Ye Gods, it's doing that "phone is using more current than the charger is able to deliver" error again (via AC adapter charger, and with a new battery).

Sometimes left to its own devices it eventually starts charging again (it's charged a little since I got home, then the error came up). The connection seems erratic, even after me giving the MicroUSB a tentative prod with tweezers/thin cotton bud. I know, I should get my hands on some compressed air, or get someone to look at the connector maybe?!

My battery is going down and down again....Battery Indicator Pro has a graph, though I don't know if I can take a screen print (unrooted phone).

Battery Monitor Widget says -495mA at the moment :( 25

Thanks for replying Harry, just read your post.

Originally I changed the MicroUSB lead a week ago (it's an official Blackberry one) thinking it was losing connection; but this new one is as bad.

From the Battery Indicator Pro the Log is weird; it shows as Unplugged, Discharging, Charging, on and off, on and off..!

Seems to be charging at the moment though. I don't have any other charger, but I'll try buying one tomorrow and see if that gives me any clues.

Hopefully this might be the solution (too early to tell as my battery is at zero and I'm trying to charge my phone up!): http://androidforums.com/desire-sup...-connection-point-htc-desire.html#post4084732

Basically northcaledon suggests trying to clean out the MicroUSB connector with a very fine needle. It seems to have made a difference.

Also interesting to note that another member suggests trying a Motorola AC Charger (I bought one in a panic from ebay earlier, to try and figure out what the culprit is) as they are reckoned not to go "loose" after long-term use (mine seem to fit fine).

PS: Bah, spoke too soon....it stopped charging (red light went off). Might be onto something though, could try taking it to a repair shop to see if they can give the connector a good clean.

Argh, my first night with my Desire HD not charging *at all*, completely dead..going to have to buy a standalone battery charger :(

After another tentative wiggle around the connector with a needle, the red light has been flashing, and is now a steady red. I do think it's probably the connector.

..Gah, I don't know, still getting the battery errors! While I wait for a battery charger, I've emailed HTC.

Can anyone recommend a battery charger (the ones where you slot the battery in and plug into the mains)? Or are they all much of a muchness? Looking on ebay and a bit bamboozled. *Bought one!

PS: I'm trying to charge my phone with it switched off, hoping that makes it get to 100% charge.

With the battery dead, it "flashes" red for ages (I read that means the battery is too hot (?). Sometimes it starts charging eventually, after a period of flashing.

My phone was picked up by courier by HTC (via UPS) and back with me in 6 days! Very impressive and I was so thankful to the assistant on the phone earlier :p

I'm no techie so I'm unsure what was wrong and there was no error sheet contained in the packaging. I was told that my Desire HD needed a new speaker (?), earpiece (?)..surprised as I didn't notice anything wrong with either, and new mainboard, "amongst other bits and pieces".

Wonder if it's the same as the mainboard overheating problems that affected the original Desire? As far as I could see, the battery maintained a decent temperature when it was faulty, so, no idea.

Glad to have it back, though :)

To be honest, I think they rebuilt the phone!! (The bionic phone). It doesn't get abused, it's encased in an aluminium/leather sleeve, silicone case, all that..but it is very well-loved (I have a compulsive need to stab at it all day long) :D Reunited hopefully for another long while.

I'm surprised it was so serious too! Had no idea. HTC were really great, and helpful on the phone, top-notch customer service.

I want to thank all the contributor on this topic. I find it
extremely expedient to share my experience from following instruction given here.

After reading all the post then i followed instruction given by moderator to clean the micro usb, with just light blowing and little scratching the connector using pin, my phone started charging even with connection to laptop, everything is now ok.

Thanks once again all the contributor especially the Moderator.
