Help backing up\restoring sd card

I should be getting a new 32 gb sd card for christmas and I was going to put my old 16 gb in my mother's new camera.

The question I had is what do I need to do to transfer all the information off the current SD card? Can I just connect it to my pc and move all the data off or do I need to back it up and restore it with a specific program? Any assistance is appreciated.

Just copy to pc and then copy back to new card
