Help Battery metering seems to be completely off

After a couple weeks, love the Turbo, but still has some strange quirks needing to be worked out...

And here's a new one:
Battery life up until yesterday has been great. After a day of moderate/heavy use, I go to sleep with about 40% power remaining and charge it up for the next day.

BUT NOW... battery life doesn't make sense at all. I've been using the phone all day as usual. It's now 9:45 PM, and the battery is still showing 92% -- which just cannot be right.

Is the calibration off all of a sudden, and if so, is there a way to correct it? I don't want to trust that it's actually 92% and not charge it overnight only to run out of juice mid-day tomorrow.

Any thoughts what to do?

Do you charge only with the Turbo charger or do you use another charger, or also charge wirelessly with a Qi charger?

Does the false battery reading survive a phone restart?

Try this: fully charge the phone to 100%, pull the charger (using the stock turbo charger) and plug back in again for another, say, 30 minutes. Does it work again?

Ok, I asked about Qi because I've read elsewhere that people who use Qi charging are having this problem. At this point I suggest that if your phone is having this problem, I'd stop using Qi and only charging with the turbo charger until more is learned about this.

For reference, see these threads:

https://forums.motorola.com/posts/3f049c8107
https://forums.motorola.com/posts/c30a64252b

In particular, I would follow the steps in this post: https://forums.motorola.com/posts/c30a64252b?commentId=835265#835265

  • Plug in the turbo wall charger to the Turbo
  • Clear Cache
  • Reboot the phone and let it charge to 100%
  • Then leave it on the charger for 30-45min longer.

Again, I'd alter these instructions by having you pull power when it reaches 100%, plug it in again, and then charge for 30 to 45 minutes longer.

Instructions for clearing the cache are in Thom's post here: http://androidforums.com/threads/droid-turbo-reference-and-tips.879102/#post-6797620

It should be noted that not everybody who uses Qi is having these issues, but it sure seems that a lot of people who use Qi are having issues, so I'd suggest avoiding Qi if you are having the battery reporting problem. Anybody whose Turbo is fine and wants to continue to use Qi - sounds good to me...

I've definitely seen it on the Motorola forums. Here is a thread: https://forums.motorola.com/posts/c30a64252b

Unfortunately, there seems to be something wrong with Moto's forums - you can see the first post but none of the replies. (At least that's what is happening to me, on multiple browsers.)

There are several battery threads on androidcentral.com that detail the same thing. Qi charging is a common experience. It's always one of two things: the phone reports 100% battery left for hours, or it reports 100% and then seems to rapidly deplete to 0% in a matter of minutes. Again, there is a common thread: people using Qi chargers. *Some* people say that they don't use Qi, but everybody else reports using something other than the stock turbo charger to charge their phone for a significant amount of time.

The steps I listed above were in a thread on the Moto forums that cannot be seen (as they were a reply to a post, and the forum is only showing the first question with no other posts in a thread) and the person who posted said that they got the result from calling either Verizon or Motorola support - I can't remember which one.

What I do not know is whether the recent VoLTE update also fixed this problem. Nobody seems to be reporting this problem at any forum I've seen since the update came out. The update did not document this as a problem that was solved, but it does say "bug fixes", so maybe.

[edit] Wait: I found a thread that shows replies. https://forums.motorola.com/posts/a813f7c54b

Scroll down in particular to this post, which seems to be from somebody who works at Moto: https://forums.motorola.com/posts/a813f7c54b?commentId=825061#825061

What "recent update" is this? There is nothing on the Verizon website..

There was an OTA (21.44.8) delivered I believe starting last week to provide Advanced Calling (VoLTE) to the Droid Turbo.

See http://www.verizonwireless.com/dam/support/pdf/system_update/benefits-droid-turbo-ac-12-10-14.pdf

  • Prepares your device for the new Advanced Calling 1.0 feature, which allows you to use Voice and Data simultaneously. To learn more, please visit www.verizonwireless.com/AdvancedCalling1.0
  • Email Attached moved to top for easy viewing
  • Device Stability Fixes/Security Updates

So, I was wrong about "bug fixes" - it was non-detailed "Device Stability Fixes/Security Updates".

I participated in the soak test for 21.44.8 that started last Wednesday to a large group of Droid Turbo users.

It had to go through that acceptance cycle before the OTA started to everyone.
People in the soak test agree not to talk about it while the test is in progress.

The OTA for 21.44.8 started today (a few hours ago).

I wasn't part of the soak test.

I cannot find a change log. Some of the references on the Verizon website list a different (lower) version number for a version that was never released.

I found no negative impact from the upgrade. I have not tried the new calling feature.

The conclusion is that it is now an OTA. If anyone finds a change log from Verizon, please let us know here.

Ahh, that makes no sense unless you're somewhere other than the USA. I got that update on the 11th.

The last four soak tests I have been in had some copies being pushed out to people who had not signed up to participate.

A guess on my part is that when people were signing up the typed in the wrong id and it was sent to a different phone.

Another guess is that it was sent to people who had reported problems.

I have never heard a reason from Verizon or Motorola.

Another key ... look at the tense in the information posted ... some of the announcements were future tense and some were present tense.

After all is said and done, using the Turbo Charger exclusively has resulted in the BEST Battery Life ever with my Droid Turbo. Twice the battery life I was experiencing before when using Qi chargers. No difference in my use or apps. YMMV, but I'm sticking with the Turbo Charger unless I need to top off in my car! And (fingers crossed), no crazy rapid discharge indication events so far!
