Can the Desire share its 3G signal via wireless?

I'm thinking about buying a Desire on 3 in the UK and wanted to know if I could turn it into a wireless hotspot and use its 3G signal to power another device - like an iPad?

Anyone know? Or am asking a bit too much from it? I think I've seen it on Nokias in the past...

Not sure if it is possible at the moment but i know the upcoming (Q3 of this year) firmware upgrade "froyo" android 2.2 will bring that particular feature.

you can use apps like pdanet http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.pdanet or easytether http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.mstream.easytether_beta to tether your phone to other devices, but i think they need to install a bit of software as well.

or if you root the phone you can use http://www.appbrain.com/app/net.szym.barnacle , i think that does what your asking.

i'll have to investigate rooting. it looks hard at first glance. i'm on apple too
