I just receive my 2nd Captivate from AT&T after doing an exchange. This one compared to my first one, the screen is darker and has a yellow look to it. Is this normal? The color does not seem as bright / white as my first Captivate.

Color looks very washed out. I've read other threads where people notice a "blue" tint due to the differences in Super Amoled. Is this what I'm experiencing?

Buy instead, I'm experiencing a yellow tint.

What is you build date? It's located on the battery.

The build date wouldn't matter. The Captivate, Vibrant, Epic, Fascinate, and European Galaxy S phones all use the same screen. The build date tells you nothing about when the screen was manufactured.

The individual components in the phone were not manufactored on the build date.

Chances are, these screens were mass produced, and are sitting in boxes, waiting to be put into Captivates, Vibrants, Epics, Fascinates, etc.

Same with other components, the chips, communication chips, etc, some are made by 3rd party hardware vendors, delivered to samsung, and sitting in boxes waiting to be assembled into our phones.

Unless there is an actual hardware revision change, the date isn't going to do you any good. As far as I know, there aren't any major hardware revisions yet. Your screen could have been made 3 months ago, your processor 4 months ago, your GPS chip 6 months ago, but your phone was assembled last week and battery date could be dated today.

    Good luck

I posted this in a different thread, here is the link http://androidforums.com/samsung-fascinate/175750-who-got-blue-tinted-screens.html

Or here is what I posted copy and pasted:

"So I own the Vibrant, and my phone has the blue tint problem also. Basically for those who don't know, you see a blue tint to things that should be white.

I've compared my Vibrant side by side to other Vibrants, Epics, and Captivates.

Here are my conclusions. Many of these Super Amoleds come with some form of tint or the other.

Possible tint colors I've noticed are:
blue/green, blue, blue/grey, yellow, dirty yellow, down right ugly brown(on an epic).

Some people may have been lucky and got one with absolutely no tint, meaning your phone produces pure warm whites.

Now, for those of you who don't see a tint, try putting your Super Amoled next to a non super amoled phone or lcd monitor, and fire up a pure white background. You may now see the tint problem when side by side next to another phone. If this is the only time you notice it, then no worries for you.

I like using Screen Test app from market, it lets you display a pure white screen. (ps..when you run this app, you will notice a horizontal dimmed area wayyy on top, a horizontal line going accross, don't worry your screen is not broken, i've noticed this on every single galaxy s i've used the app on. I've also noticed the faint green line on the left on every phone, that should be normal too, honestly, it is barely noticable unless you dig and search for it)

So, what do you do if you have a blue tint? Well, you might consider yourself lucky, I dunno. Some people claim, the blue tint was done on purpose. You see, the blue leds die faster than the other ones. Since the blue leds have a short life, the argument by some people is, that samsung purposely made the blue ones more prominant, thus giving a longer life to the overall display. I don't know if this is true or not.

Another option is trying to exchange your phone for one without the blue tint. I say, proceed with caution. Trust me, I've looked at several of these phones, I would hate it if I ended up with a yellow, dirty yellow, or brown tinted screen. You don't want to go into an endless loop of doing returns/exchanges.

Finally, I've noticed that the blue tint may be getting better as some have claimed would happen, either that or I'm getting use to it. One final note, although the blue tint is there, side by side comparison showed my colors look brighter.

Last time I went into T-mobile I was showing the employee and comparing Vibrant screens, she said "I see the blue tint, but honestly your phone looks nicer than the yellow tint, the yellow one looks dingy and old" I had to agree with her.

    :cool::rolleyes::cool::rolleyes::cool::rolleyes::c ool::rolleyes::cool::rolleyes::cool:

PS... ZuneHD, Incredible, and Nexus one all use Amoled screens, users have reported tint problems also, usually pink tint, but some reported blue too. Thank god my super amoled is not pink!"

wow, that just made me sad. That exactly describes my phone color on the 2nd captivate I received..... "dirty yellow" !!!!

the first one was "white" with no tint, but it had random shutdown issues.

Ya I don't know what to say. I am still debating what I should do about my blue tint. I'm not one of these people to do endless exchanges, 3-4-5, get outa here, I do 1 exchange if I have to, after that if I'm still having problems I return and go to a different product.

So, worries me I might get a phone with a dingy yellow or brown tint if I exchange. Heck, you might get a worse one too. You already did an exchange once.

Dunno, think about it, go to a couple At&t stores, and compare your phone to display model in person. Download Screen Test app on both phones, and use the white background to compare.

I wish there were actual photos of all these different tint colors so people can see and compare. I'm not too sure if a camera would even be able to pick that up, it would be great though.

I really do wonder how the blue tints look like

ps... I wouldn't exchange a phone for random shut downs, unless it was doing it with absolutely no aps you installed. Meaning test it fresh out of the box, if it doesn't shut down, then most likely when it starts doing random shut downs, the problem is probably software based, most likely some app you downloaded, and nothing wrong with the actual phone itself.

Similar to computers, most computers work fine brand new, until you start putting on tons of programs, and your computer begins to freeze.

I'm getting sleepy, so I'll do this for you tomorrow. I'll post a picture of my Vibrant next to an HTC phone, you can see the difference in screen tint.

actually, visit this link, you can see a photo comparing droidx with captivate

I know we don't want to hijack this thread with an ancillary topic, but I needed to respond to your P.S. (sorry, OP)

I agree that the optimal environment warranting the exchange of a phone for random shutdowns is if it's fresh out of the box and "untarnished" by installed apps. That said, in the hundreds of posts about this issue both here and on other forums there has been no link to an installed app being the smoking gun that causes this anomaly.

Well, considering you'd be then viewing said photos on an LCD screen that itself is probably biased blue or yellow...

Plus, unless the same person took a photo of all of them side-by-side, at the same time with the same camera under the exact same lighting conditions, you're going to get variations in white-balance from camera-to-camera and environment-to-environment.

I honestly don't see a blue tint in the picture, maybe what I'm seeing in my original 1st Captivate IS the blue tint, but it's definitely better than the dirty yellow.....

I guess I'm just going to have to do another exchange.

Okay, but in my experience, owning different smartphones, usually random shutdowns and other problems are software based, and always the cause of some stupid 3rd party app. For example on my BB bold 9700, phone is rock solid, until you install Pandora, then guess what, phone goes crazy, freezes, and other strange stuff.

Same with my htc phone, apps from market place can cause random stuff to happen.

Sometimes when you install 30 apps, it is hard to pinpoint the culprit.

    just my opinion thats all

Here is a pic I just took.
HTC phone on left, Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant on the right.
Which screen tint do you prefer?

I used "Screen Test" app from market place, both set to max brightness.

Also, if you think your phone doesn't display a blue tint, try putting it next to a non super amoled phone or lcd computer monitor, you may see it then. If still not, then yaa you got lucky! Show us your comparison!

Thanks for your picture, that definitely shows a better example. I will use your method and take a picture of my 2 captivates tonight. I already called AT&T today and they will be sending me a 3rd one and will be arriving tomorrow. *crosses fingers* that everything will be ok with the 3rd one.

By the way, is this the app that you are using?
Screen Test - Android app on AppBrain
Screen Test by Amberfog? Is that picture taken while on the very first color setting of that App? next color should be black.

Here are my photos I just snapped right now using the "Screen Test" app.

The screen on the right is my 1st original Captivate
The screen on the left is the 2nd replacement Captivate

I guess my first one (right) is considered to be the ones with "blue" tint, but I actually favor that over the one on the left because it's much brighter. As you can see in the photo, the one on the left actually looks washed out and dull. The color is not as vibrant, and gives a yellow / dirty brown look to it.

I already called for a 3rd captivate to be sent in to me, I hope that one will be much better.

Wait I'm confused. The one on the left looks gorgeus! The one on the right is blue and ugly. I don't see a yellow dingy tint AT ALL on the left one. You prefer the blue tint on the right? Seriously, the one on the left LOOKS PERFECT, warm gorgeus white. The one on the right looks unnatural.

What if you get a 3rd one with an even different tint, then what?

By the way, don't you have to send the phones back, usually if they don't recieve it within a few days, I think its 7, they bill your credit card for full price of the phone. At least that is how T-Mobile works.

Anyways, I would die for the warm white on the left, I don't know whats wrong with that, doesn't look yellow at all.

My blue tint is pretty severe, dont you think?

The captivate on the left isn't really as great as you think. It looks very grainy, and makes the pictures look like a manilla yellow. Has a dirty look to it. If the next captivate comes, and I'm not satisfied, I may just do a full refund and go back to my blackberry bold until a better android phone is out for AT&T. I love android, if there were only more choices for AT&T

Don't get me wrong, I love the captivate, just not feeling satisfied with Samsung's QC and support since I'm paying a no commitment price for my phone.

so you really prefer the blue tint over the warm white? interesting?

but look at my pic, don't you think my blue tint is rather severe? it bugs me, I rather have your warm white captivate.

I like the bluer white. It looks cleaner. The HTC white looks kind of dingy, but digital cameras process pictures differently so who knows how accurate the colors are in the pictures.
