Help disable network data?

I received a motorola cliq from a friend who just bought a new blackberry. I am currently an at&t customer and wish to use the cliq but i do not want to have to pay for a data plan. I was wondering if there was a way disable network data and only rely on wifi or if the carrier will disable data usage for my number. thanks a bunch

I'm curious about this also....
I know there's feature to disable data connection while the phone is ROAMING, but I'm not sure if that also disable data connection while the phone ISN'T roaming...

When I'm not traveling and in my home city, I also do not want my phone to be downloading data cuz it'll cost me a pretty penny if that starts happening..

I'm hopin someone have an answer for this
