EVO V 4G stuck on white HTC screen

I'm a TOTAL newbie, just trying to recover ( or, get back to the stock ROM), without losing anything.

1) Is this possible, without rooting? (If not, can I root without access to the phone's Settings?)

2) Is SD card data recovery possible, via a card reader?

Non-rooted, CDMA (Virgin Mobile)

I have tried every Recovery screen option, except "FACTORY RESET", which will be the last resort.

FAST BOOT (no result))

RECOVERY:
-Reboot system now (no result)
-Apply update from external storage (no result)
-Wipe data/factory reset
-Wipe cache partition (no result)
-apply update from cache

FACTORY RESET

SIMLOCK: SD init success/fail, w/wo SD card (no result)

IMAGE CRC: Calculating-please wait (no result)
