I've noticed that my phone easily downloads my contacts from google and Facebook to my phone. However, when i modify or add a contact to my phone it doesn't update to my Google contacts.

This is important since many of us are considering installing other roms and we want to keep our contacts

Help! Vanilla android does this no problem.

There are actually two contact lists using HTC Sense...1 that syncs with GMail and the other for phone. If you add your contacts in GMail then they will sync to your phone when you edit on either phone or GMail. If you add a contact on your phone, it will not sync with GMail contacts.
I believe you can go into settings to identify which list you want to add a new contact to when you are adding on your phone.

i'm not seeing this. Even contacts that synced down from google can't be updated on my phone. For example. HTC added their birthdays because it also synced with facebook. It doesn't sync back up.

Also I've added new contacts, how do I move them to where they sync with google?

Also interested in this...also is there a way to avoid multiple listings in your "people" contacts on your phone. For instance...sometimes i have 3 contacts listed (one from Gmail, Phone, and FB) they dont link automatic...or do you have to go through manually (im guessing this is the case)?

When you add a contact on your phone, the top drop down menu will be Contact Type which gives you the option for Phone or GMail (not sure about Facebook since I don't use that communist site).
After you save the contact, it will then sync with GMail if you saved the Contact Type as GMail. Or, if you saved the Contact Type as Phone, it will neither sync with GMail nor show up on GMail...just on your phone.

As said above, there are multiple phonebooks.

    Open the People app.
Go to Menu/View and you will see the phonebooks available and the options to turn them on/off.

Any contact that is in the "Phone" phonebook, WILL NOT sync with anything else and will only be available on the phone.

When you create a new contact the top drop down box is for "Contact Type" (this would be less confusing if it said Phonebook or something here) and it is set to "Phone" be default. You must change this to "Google" if you want the new contact to sync to Google.

If you have already created a bunch of contacts in the Phone phonebook, the easiest way to move them to the Google phonebook so that they sync is as follows.
Menu/Import Export / Export to SD / Phone
Now that the Phone contacts have been exported to SD, DELETE them from the phonebook.
Now Menu/Import Export / Import from SD / Google.
The contacts should now appear in the Google phonebook and sync with Google (it may take awhile or you can force a sync by going through Settings/Accounts).

As far as the facebook birthdays/phone numbers not transferring, the problem is with Facebook. FB will not allow you to export contact data from your account. So, the phone has permission to view the data, but not to copy and sync it. A while back someone wrote a program to rip the contact info from his facebook account and sync it with Plaxo, and FB shutdown his account within 24 hours (if you google i am sure you can find the blog about it). The ONLY way to get data from facebook to google is to manually enter it (which sucks).

*Something to note is that the Calendar works in a similar way. The default calendar is called "My Calendar" and is ONLY available on the phone. If you want an item to sync, you must add it to one of the google calendars.

Regarding the calendar, if you want to set the Google Calendar as your default & only calendar for adding entries you can do the following:

    Go into calendar
    Menu, More
    Calendars
Uncheck My Calendar and PC Sync and any others leaving just GMail Calendar checked
    exit out

Is there a way to set the phone to add all new contacts as google contacts by default. It its incredibly annoying to have to remember to change the contact type to google every freaking time I get a new number.

As much as I like HTC for putting out cool stuff, this is honestly one of the most idiotic things they do with Sense. Putting an option to save to phone, when all customers who have purchased these phones did so for the Android OS experience (i.e. a Google phone with Google backups), is plain STUPID. I'm now rooted and realizing that I accidentally put a handful of my contacts into the stupid Phone memory instead of backed up to Google. Really annoying and totally contradictory to the intent of this phone.
