As Google have settled their trademark row over the use of gmail in the UK, when we get the option to ditch our googlemail.co.uk addresses, will this mean a hard reset is required, or both will work?

"British users with Googlemail addresses will be asked whether they wish to change their address. It will not affect the settings or functionality of the accounts, Google said."

Essentially, it changes the default from .googlemail to .gmail if you want.

I set up my desire with @gmail.com even though I created the Google account in the UK with the @googlemail.com suffix and mail gets to both.

The "." as in xxx.yyy@gmail.com seems removable - mail to xxxyyy@gmail.com gets there too out of interest ...

i've had an @gmail.com account for years. It was a by invite only when i got it. I had always assumed google just ditched gmail and called it googlemail instead but left current gmail account as is.

I assume us gmail account holders will not be affected by any changes ?

So does that mean that "They - Google" will switch all our names automaitically?

Me too, 7 years or something. I thought they dropped the gmail too, didn't realise there was a reason for it.

I installed hotspot shield for a few minutes which allowed me to get a gmail.com account in the UK. Googlemail.com is too damn long winded.

They are exactly the same - create a googlemail account (which got google around the tm issue) and you create a gmail account - exactly the same account but to routes to it.

Before I realised this a while ago I used a proxy to get around it as well ;)

    They aren't completely the same.

Certain functions like Picasa Sync, will not work with googlemail.com but will with gmail.com (and no you can't just substitute the two)

It's rather silly but for mail delivery they are identical, for other services they aren't.

i think it depends whether you have a .com account or a .co.uk account as gmail.co.uk was already taken by another company but .com was fine, or thats rather how i'm reading it (just like you can have @hotmail.co.uk or @hotmail.com)

I think you're reading it wrong:

I have used googlemail for registrations on other sites but gmail labelled email gets to me fine too.

That's it - there is no gmail.co.uk and it was nothing to do with the domain being taken by another company as such - it was a trademark dispute hence googlemail.com in UK and Germany

If you've got a googlemail.com address, you'll get the option to change it to the original gmail.com format...

If you go onto a PC browser, and log into your email, click

Settings - "Accounts and Import" - next to the email address - it'll give you a link to "Switch to @gmail.com?"

It won't affect emails you receive, you will get all emails sent to you@googlemail.com but also you'll be able to send and receive to you@gmail.com

It's just a nicer email address...

You'll have to change the address in the settings on your mobile though... the password / servers etc. won't change, just your email address :)

Do you remove the old googlemail accounts first or can you just change them? I can't see any way to change only to remove and start over.

You have to do a full factory reset if on your phone if you want to change to gmail, google are apparently working on a fix for this,I'm holding off 'till then.

Why a full reset? Surely if you just delete the googlemail accounts then re setup as gmail it will work?

BTW is there an official thread on this here?

See here Google Mail is becoming Gmail in the UK - Gmail Help

    "

    • Android: If you use an Android device and change your address, the Google Talk app will not connect properly, but other Google applications should work fine. The current solution for this is to do a full reset of your Android device and use @gmail.com, but we are working on resolving this issue as soon as possible."

I changed my Googlemail to Gmail.

My phone freaked out at this and I had to do a factory reset as it said in order to use certain apps i couldn't remove my google mail address.
