ive been looking for the same thing. there is that nasty thing called AndNav that i cant seem to make much use of... it's a beta and either it doesnt do what i want it to, or i simply dont have the patience to plow through it's awful, unhelpful interface.
but i need to download maps to my phone, and dont necessarily need a turn by turn gps navigation system like andnav. i'm just wondering how to get maps on my phone when im outside of tower coverage.

also, ive found this link to be helpful: http://letmegooglethatforyou.com/?q=gpx

We've been working on one ltrax - Google Code and it's in heavy development. It'll support creation of tracks by way of widgets and doing so without a 'net connection. It will eventually be able to save GPX files to the SD card.
