Help Hate having to "tap to compose"

When using the native text app, the default focus is always on the 'to' box. I start texting away...in the 'to' field, only to get an error message, then have to go back and touch the 'tap to compose' box and start over. Google voice doesn't do this. Any way to make the application default focus to the 'tap to compose' box?

I hate it to but one thing I did learn that made things a little better is to just tap the enter key and it will tab down to the "compose" box
