Help with upgrade - Google G1

Hi forum folk
I know it's probably been asked a million times before. But everywhere I look takes it for granted that you have done this sort of thing before, I haven't and am a bit wary.
I want to upgrade my Google G1 to Froyo and eventually Cyanogen.
can someone please give me an idiots guide to performing these actions?

I am not shore but "ROM manager" offers to update all automatically I already have CM 4.3.25.2 on roted G1 and I believe everything will work if I try, but first I will get new Android phone and play with this "old" one.

Anyone tried that ?
