How to get rid of additional Groups in People app?

Not sure where to post this, but put it in Desire because I think it's related to HTC Sense UI and/or the People app...

In GMail, I've grouped my contacts into "Familie", "Venner" and some more; but on the Desire, there are additional groups named "Co-workers", "Family", "Friends", and "VIP". I neither use nor want these -- but I can't see how I can get rid of them.

The menu in the "Groups" view has an item called "Delete groups", but it does not list exactly those I want to delete. I can't seem to edit (rename) them either, to merge them with my own ones. :(

Are these built-in groups mandatory, or is there some trick I can use? I've got root, and not afraid to use it!
