What are the policies exactly regarding the contract I signed. Am I allowed to get out of it leaving me free to get another device on another carrier or am I require to stay with sprint being left to choose a different sprint device? Would there be cancelletaion fees associated in breaking the contract and going to another carrier?

its always best to call them personally, but to help you out, sprint's 30 day guarantee will allow you to return the phone, cancel your contract, and only owe the prorated bill.

Im pretty sure you can leave and go to another carrier if you return it during your 30 days.

If you are within your first 30 days you can cancel and walk away, no questions asked.

may or may not be useful to you, but in CA, state law allows you 30 days to return/cancel no questions asked. this applies to any carrier.

I like this phone a lot but I'm keeping my options open. I've used itunes to manage my music forever and I'm just having a hard time with breaking from that.

You don't have to. Download itunes agent and you can sync music with itunes. It works flawlessly.
