Is is really necessary to backup your prl before flashing a new rom

I want to try flashing a custom rom on my hero 2.1 but the thread said that first I must backup my stock rom (which I did) and also backup my prl. (this seems a little more complicated) Did all you guys have to do this too. how did you do it. the method they describe uses a program that requires my msl code which I dont have or know how to get. I called MTS and they wont give it to me.

long question short: For all you people installing custom roms on your android: what did you backup first just in case things went bad with the new rom

Oh okay, I didn't see the first time you're on MTS. Do a google search for CDMA Workshop, it's a universal program that works on pretty much all CDMA phones. It should be able to find your msl for you.
