Hi all I'm a newbie to all this. But I want to make sure I get this right before attempting to flash to the JI6 update.

I'm currently rooted on the stock ROM (ECLAIR). How do I go about updating to the JI6? Here are the steps, correct me if I'm wrong.

    1.Download the zip

    2.Unzip the downloaded zip

    3. Turn off phone, press and hold volume keys at the same time and plug your phone in computer to get in download mode.

4.Open ODIN and under PDA option, browse for the .tar

5 Click on start to begin the upgrade.

NO need for PIT file, correct?
Will i still be rooted or do I need to root after I update?

    Thanks for helping

    Your steps are correct.

I don't think you need the .pit file, but as a matter of course it's usually included in the process.

You will lose root in the update and therefore will need to root again.

As always, be sure to back up any important data before updating.

What version of Odin are you using? I've heard of folks having trouble with anything under v1.3 The latest version is 1.7.

Thanks for the quick reply. One more question - I shound UNCHECK the re-partion box, correct?

I'm currently at work now, so I can't recall which version I have. But i just downloaded Odin last night. So it's best to update to V1.7?

I do believe you leave "Re-Partion" unchecked, yes.

As far as which version you're using, I tend to subscribe to the notion that it's best to use the latest version of a given software. I doubt it would make a great deal of difference between 1.3 and 1.7; I do know that some have mentioned that v1.1 did not work very well for them and upgrading to v1.3 fixed issues they were having.

The first post in this thread has 1.7:

Some people (myself included) have had little to no luck with Kies or KiesMini.

Thus ODIN or ROM Manager are the only options for ROM updates.

psz brings up a good point: Anyone who decides to flash a ROM, whether factory or custom, should be familiar with Odin.

Odin can be intimidating at first; it's not particularly intuitive. However, when all else fails, it's what's most likely to get you out of trouble.

I've never used Kies, and probably never will!
