LG Optimus 4X HD Repair Guide:

  • Before starting your repair it is essential to be certain your device is completely powered down.
  • First step will be to remove the battery cover on the back of the device, followed by the removal of the battery, simcard, and the memory card.
  • Next, you will need to use a Small Phillips Screwdriver to unscrew ten (10) Small Phillips screws which are highlighted in red in the image below.
  • Then using your Safe Open Pry Tool remove the back housing from the rest of the device, this is done by releasing the clips which hold the housing to the unit. Simply wedge the pry tool in between the seam that connects the housing to the chrome bezel, and run the pry tool along the sides of the device. This step is also illustrated in the image below.

  • After removing the back housing set it to the side, and using your pry tool remove another back cover located at the bottom of the device. This cover can be seen in the image below highlighted in orange. Similar to the housing, this cover is removed by releasing the clips holding it in place.
  • Next, you will use your Small Phillips Screwdriver and unscrew three (3) more Small Phillips screws (highlighted in red below). The screws vary in size, so it will be important to keep them together.
  • The following step will be to release the remaining connections to the motherboard. You will first remove the bottom speaker with your pry tool located at the bottom of the device (highlighted in orange).
  • Then release the volume button flex cable (Figure 3.1) which is adhered to the back housing (also in orange on right side of device), using the pry tool first release the adhesive covering it and simply lift up the volume button flex cable.
  • The parts which will need to be released are the pop connectors and antennas, these are depicted and colored in yellow below. They include the headphone jack, touch screen (adhered to the motherboard), ear speaker, and main camera. Again, these pop connectors are all highlighted in the image below to the right. Use your pry tool to release each connector.

  • (Figure 3.1) When releasing the volume button flex leave it off the the side as shown.
  • (Figure 3.2) After all that the power button flex cable will need to be released. It is adhered to the button on the top left of the device. Carefully use a spudger tool to get under the power button and release the cable from the inside of the bezel.
  • (Figure 3.3) Next use your spudger tool to get under the vibrate motor, and cautiously lift it up from the adhesive which holds it to the motherboard. Be careful not to rip or tear the cables soldered to the motherboard.
  • (Figure 3.4) Now the motherboard is ready to be removed. Simply use the spudger tool to help you carefully lift it away from the rest of the device. Make sure not to tug on or rip any of the connections that have been released prior.

  • (Figure 4.1) Continue to use the spudger tool and remove the main camera.
  • (Figure 4.2) Next you will remove the headphone jack along with the sensor cable it is attached too. Be sure not to tear the cable when removing.
  • Then the main touch screen flex cable should be lifted off the housing using the spudger tool. The lifted cable can be seen in Figure 4.4.
  • (Figure 4.3) On both sides of the device there is a plastic frame attached to the housing which needs to be released using the spudger tool. Using the tool release the clips which hold the housing in place. After the clips are released you should be able to separate the front housing.
  • (Figure 4.4) The next step will need to be approached carefully. After all the clips have been released the LCD screen remains attached to the housing, while the touch screen and the chrome bezel will be separated. Make sure the main touch screen flex cable is fed through the slot in the housing while housing is removed. Then take same step with LCD screen (feed the cable through the slot) and remove it from the housing.

  • Our last step will be to remove the touch screen from the front housing.
  • Before removing the screen, you will need to use a heat gun (on low) or a hair dryer (on medium) to heat up the sides and corners of the device for approximately 30 - 45 seconds, holding the heat 3-4 inches from the screen. This will make sure the screen is not excessively heated. Once the device is heated up the adhesive that holds the screen together will loosen.
  • Next use your pry tool to wedge between the housing and the touch screen and run the pry tool along the sides and corners releasing the screen from the adhesive and thus the housing. If you have any trouble during the removal, simply apply more heat to the stubborn areas.

  • Finally, replace any damaged parts with new parts and reverse these steps in order to put your device back together.
