Help mobile broadband

I got a question bout tethering and mobile broadband.
On the VZW website it says the inc and x hav mobile broadband but the d2 doesn't. So my question is what would the mobile broadband be used for? Is it like tethering?
Next question is if I want to tether do I need to root or can i do it without rooting? And how do I do it? A link to something to show me how maybe. Thx

Yep, you root your phone, then install Wireless Tether from the market.
