Play Store Won't Work on WiFi

There are a couple of other threads on this topic. One VPN solution is what you are doing - connecting to your personal VPN at home. The other is an app called DNSet that is intended to let you use Google's DNS server instead of the one your carrier imposes on you -- that also works by creating a VPN and is a quick solution for folks who don't have their own VPN servers.

The VPN's work since they use only IPv4 and there is never a v6 address on that adapter to create a conflict. The IP Address in your Advanced menu will just show a single v4 address. (BTW, I always see the Advanced menu item even if Wifi is turned off - did your carrier change something if it's not visible? I'm on VZW.)

Oh ok. Thats awesome. I just downloaded DNSet to get a better understanding of what it is and how it works. You're right, works like a charm.

Yeah, for some reason I don't get an 'Advanced' option in my Wi-Fi settings. Its very possible my carrier has disabled it or something. I'm in Australia and I'm with Telstra.

So for anyone else hunting for a solution, if your ISP doesn't support IPv6, this 100% seems to fix the problem. Either download and use DNSet or your own VPN if you have one and you should be good to go. Big thanks bhl62 for all your help on this :)

I'm not going to say you shouldn't be using the DNSet app but as it does set up a 'local VPN' it should be pointed out that the term itself is a bit of a misnomer. If 'local' is a reference to be solely a service on your phone that doesn't quite apply to how any VPN functions. Also, DNSet's page doesn't state which protocol it's using, much less which VPN service it might be using so you're basically trusting all your phone's online presence with an unspecified, unknown VPN service.

Again, I'm not saying anyone should avoid using DNSet, as far as I know it's a completely valid, trustworthy utility. I just wish for a little more transparency about its underlying functionality. Browsing through other DNS apps on Google Play most don't implement a VPN and just use a listing of public DNS addresses that you can pick and choose from. Examples include:

This issue has frustrated me for weeks, ever since my phone received an Android update!!! Thank you so much!!! I did so much trying to fix the Play Store download issue to no avail including everything on this site:

http://www.nanacide.com/my-android-wont-download-apps/howtofixit.php

For whatever reason my downloads worked on guest network or Sprint network only. I played with router security and only other way it worked was if I had no security. Talk about a royal pain in the butt.

Solution: On my router I disabled IPV6.

I had a similar problem with my Galaxy S7. I found that the google play store was insistent on using ipv6 to communicate, even though I do not have the network to support it. My isp is not a adopter of ipv6, so far. I am not exactly certain what change I made on the wireless router fixed this issue, but its one of two. I dropped the security down to WPA1 (TKIP+AES) from WPA2/1 , and I disabled WMM extensions on the radio. I also made certain pfsense had ipv6 completely disabled. Strangest thing is everything else worked fine, just google play store. I'm leaning towards the WMM. Later.

I had the exact same issues as the OP. No amount of resets and reinstalls had any effect. Finally my i-t guy played with our routers at work and disabled the WMM and bingo, instant success..
