Renting movies on rooted devices

I had submitted several questions to Google about their policy for renting and purchasing content on Google Play and rooted devices. Today I got this email:

I'm Claire, and I'm a Google Play specialist. We've made some changes to the Google Play Movies & TV app recently and we think you'll be happy with the results! If you end up running into any viewing problems however, please do let me know and I'll be happy to help.

I don't know if that means I can watch purchased content, rented content, or what. Is there anyone with a rooted phone or knowledge of this policy change that can shed some light on the matter?

I have heard from other folk here that the latest version of the app does indeed work with rooted devices. Can't verify myself, party because I'm on uprooted stock but mainly that I'm a cheapskate not willing to pay 99c to experiment

I bit the bullet and paid the $3 to rent a movie... I can watch it on my phone!

I may finally be able to upgrade my iPad to an android tablet!!

Downloading a rented movie from Google Play works great. Movies look and sound good on my GSII and actually they seem to download a lot faster than rentals from iTunes on my iPad.

I am really happy that Google made this change as I have already rented and watched 2 movies this week at work.
