Ok guys, I'm sure I'm about to be crucified but here it is.... After searching for six hours here at work at the dispatch desk, I have been unable to find a solid answer. I have a brand new Dinc with the most recent software(3.26.605.1) and I am looking to root it. From what I have read, here and elsewhere, my take is that if I root it on this current software and I need to go in for warranty work I will be unable to fully restore the phone back to factory with S OFF. I have read that the downgrade fix will not work because it is older software and the phone recognizes that. I know that I can use unrevoked to do it without a problem(according to threads again, here and elsewhere). My main concern is being able to have that option to just stroll into Verizon and get a replacement. Can anyone shed some light on this? Preferably someone who has done this already. I am sure there are not many if any that have due to the newness of the update. Ok, I'm ready, fire away. Also if there is a specific post that covers this a link would be perfectly fine. Thanks in advance and sorry if this is a double post or a search error......:D

I have searched through the forums at this site, xda dev, and read the guide at theincrediblelist.com....and the impression I got is that there are many different versions of the incredible that each require a different rooting technique (ie. AMOLED vs SLCD, ver 2.2 vs 2.1, software version, radio version, etc). As if that wasn't enough - many of the root software and techniques are outdated and have been replaced by simpler, and less buggy methods. So it's not a question of a scarcity of guides and information....there's so much I don't know what's right for my phone!

I rooted my former droid eris without a hitch.....would like to root the incredible as well (loved the rooted phone). But for all the reasons in the above paragraph, I am afraid. If someone would kindly tell me the simplest way to root my phone without bricking it, you will have my eternal gratitude. I'm especially afraid of the SLCD. I don't need to be able to flash roms (although nandroid backup would be nice) - mainly want root for SU permission.

    Phone specs:

    SLCD (hardware version 0003)
    Android 2.2
    Software number 3.26.605.1
    baseband (radio?) version 2.15.00.07.28
I know better than to accept the Nov update, but I think it may have come preinstalled (kernel 2.6.32.17-g9a2fc16)

I know WormDoes posted a similar question in this thread (http://androidforums.com/incredible...d-3-rooting-stock-incredible-evo-2-2-a-3.html), but he didn't get any responses that I'm aware of. Please have mercy on a non-techie noob and tell me what i have to do!

Just wait a day or two and unrevoked will be back up and running.

Only thing is, a lot of these forums and guides seem to suggest that there's a lot more to do than just install the HBOOT driver to your pc and run unrevoked. And will it mess up the SLCD? And I still don't quite get the difference b/t unrevoked3 and unrevoked forever (they say forever is permanent, so they how is it reversible? do i have to run unrevoked3 before forever? aack it's so confusing!)

everyone thanks for all the input and thanks for not making a scene about this frequent thread on the forum....its crazy to have people just reply instead of replying with the word 'search' lol.. I still need some answers. I have a mac and dont know how to put in the adb commands. jsuh, how do I know if it is amoled or slcd?

the funny thing is that I read all of these posts last night and I was sure I understood exactly how to perform the operation. Then I read on another forum that if you have the 3.26 version software it would not work. the issue is there is a lot of conflicting information floating around the internet which makes me nervous about this process....

Go into settings => about phone => hardware information

if hardware version is 0002, it's AMOLED
    if it's 0003 it's SLCD

jsuh has posted a straightfoward-appearing version of how to root for the SLCD folks...I think I'm gonna try it tonight!

You'll just need to use a custom recovery other than the standard Clockwork. There's a modded CWM version out there and I believe RA recovery fits the bill as well.

Ok lets clear up the confusion. First get the unrevoked tool. Then do the drivers. Next step is to download this file. http://dougpiston.com/files/Recovery/PB31IMG_cwm_mod.zip

Unzip the file. Then start the tool but don't plug in the phone. Select custom recovery and chose the recovery.img you just unzipped. Then plug in phone enable debugging and enjoy your rooted phone.

It really isnt that difficult. Very easy in fact. :)

Hey....I just went and followed jsuh's instructions on that link - rooted successfully without a hitch. The hardest part was getting the 'ADB' thing to work...trick was to install the drivers (the HBOOT stuff from the unrevoked site) before installing sdk (well i installed it after, but that was because it wasn't working without the drivers!!)

It wasn't bad at all! (what does it mean that i rooted before doing anything else on this new phone, including making calls?)

well when you put it like that it doesn't sound hard at all. I can not express enough that my main concern is the restore to factory if I need to have warranty work done. If you can confirm the factory downgrade is doable with the 3.26 software then i am going to do it. Im sorry this is such a shenanigan but that is my main concern....plus im a noob lol

Damn good explanation, I think that's where most SLCD users are getting confused.

It'll work and I need to get off my tail and update the 2.2 downgrade thread to include the newest version now that Unrevoked came through. Didn't really want to change it until then b/c it was unrootable using the typical means and this is afterall...a rooting forum. :D

    Doug,
If you get a chance to extract the new rom.zip would you let me know the MD5 you get. I'd like a trustable cross reference to know mine matches when I get the time to extract it. Better yet if you'd be willing to host it, perhaps I could add it to the thread as a primary D/L and put up mine as a mirror since I'm using less reliable hosting sites. Just a thought if you get time and are cool with that.
