Help Root Questions

I don't know how to root or unlock my Samsung Infuse bootloader and I don't really know what's the purpose of doing those, but what if I do root my phone and unlock the bootloader, will I still be able to update my phone to Gingerbread when it comes out this month? Or do I have to wait and do those things after the update? And does rooting and unlocking the bootloader make the phone faster? What do they do to the phone?

Please check out the rooting area above. I will post more specific answers in a bit but understand that when we answer this over and over and over it gets lame hahaha. And it clutters up the forum to have so many posts asking the same question
