Ok so here is the thing, I'm with tmobile and a have a G1 (rooted of course). I'm considering going over to Verizon and getting the Droid X but I heard its going to be locked down and won't be able to receive custom roms. Also the fact that it has this weird Motoblur-ish interface over android 2.1 (soon to be updated to 2.2), and Android 3.0 is on the horizon. Does that mean Motorola will be unwilling to upgrade to 3.0 in favor of their UI over the new one? Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

The G1 updates are mainly about getting the phone to run the new Android deserts. Other features such as apps to sd have been incorporated into Android & are a consequence of a lack of space with the G1. The Droid X has more space & better hardware, so it doesn't need Cyanogen to help it. Most of the appeal of custom rom's has little want for this phone. The only thing I see as helpful is root & the ability to run apps such as wireless-tether, which are still possible with this phone.

Why wouldn't this phone get 3.0?

    Current Rumors:

Minimum hardware requirements for Android 3.0 devices are: 1GHZ CPU, 512MB of RAM, displays from 3.5” and higher.

Another point about locking up is that more and more phones will be locked up because it makes sense (not sure if Galaxy will be locked since international version isn't) for the carriers/manufactures to do it that way. I would do that if I were them.

Awesome info. Thanks that makes since. The only reason I'm wondering if it won't get 3.0 is because from what I have read 3.0 is going to be made with the very specific purpose of competing with other UI's. And since Motorola is running its own UI on the Droid X, would it make since for them to give us a choice to upgrade to the UI that 3.0 offers?

Newest information states that Droid X isn't really running any UI but just a whole lot of widgets. And I really hope that all the UIs disappear for the better future of android.

I think they could still have a great future with multiple UIs. But only if you are able to disable them in favor of another if you wanted to.

I posted the rumored minimum requirements above for Android 3.0 & the X does qualify. They say also it will eliminate the need for custom skins like Sense, though no word on whether they will be banned from future iterations.

Here's a quote from unwiredview.com about the Droid X Launch event:

"Another interesting takeway from Droid X launch, was the total absence of Motorola Blur custom user interface from the event. When asked about it, Sanjay Jha, Motorola CEO, confirmed that MotoBlur is running on Droid X, but it has been hidden from the user."

These UI's delay they android updates cause they have to do a bunch of extra coding to make the update work with their UI.

Aren't most rumors, not true?

Regardless, now that you posted that, I remember reading it... (looks for picard-facepalm smiley)
