Should I keep my T Mobile DEFY?

I've just ordered a DEFY from T Mobile (UK).

Looking on this forum, it seems I might have problems updating to Froyo 2.2 as the phone is locked to T Mobile.

This raises two questions:
i) Is Froyo 2.2 'essential' (I'll mainly use the phone for calls, texting, GPS and some browsing, eg checking gmail)?
ii) If Froyo is worthwhile, should I get an unlocked phone instead?

If for nothing else, I'm starting to get 3-4 days of battery life following the 2.2 update. As always, YMMV. Having full "Flash" for web browsing is another added benefit.

Having a ruggedized phone that's waterproof, as well as a better sounding (cleaner and louder) earpiece and speaker, than my newly acquired HTC Sensation, has guaranteed that I'll be keeping the Defy for some time.

it's not that much better. Depends on wether you having probs in 2.1 I guess. One thing better is apps to SD card in froyo.

quite a late reply I know, but I have my Defy on T-Mobile and it was updated to Froyo using the update from T-Mobile with no problem.
