Hey guys I'm tempted to sign up for this Sidekick plan $1/day for unlimited text IM email & web browsing. then 15c/min for calls

I won't even make calls that much so I'm not too concerned I just like the $30/mo. internet & text plan

My question is, will it work on the G1? Or is T-mobile smart enough to block it somehow... also even if they did block it , how about if I unlocked the phone first? would it then work?

And last question, what do you think the data speed is on sidekick prepaid? GPRS, EDGE, 2G OR 3G?

    Thank you

    well here's my opinion..

no tmobile won't let you do that... i know it's lame, i wouldn't mind a sidekick plan.. but you miss out on the 3G anyways.

    here's your third opinion:

    NO.

And you know GPRS and Edge are both 2G right?

The unlimited text plan for the G1 is $35 if you want 400 texts it is $25 what are you really saving here? And with the G1 plan you get unlimited hotspot at all the Starbucks and Barnes & Nobles and unlimited 3G. Save $5 and limit your texts or spend $5 more and get unlimited w/3g and hotspot. I think we are spliting hairs here. You will of course have to get a voiceplan, but you said you won't use it much so get 600 for $39 at 15 cents a min that is 260 min for $39 it is a better deal for the plan they already offer. I jumped on when they had 1000min for $39. If you can't afford $65 a month for a phone then you need a free phone. At work there are lots of young people with Blackberries and Motorola Q's and when I ask them how is the internet on that, they tell me "oh I couldn't afford it so I shut off the data plan." And what good is having a smartphone with no data plan?

It might work. Just get a T-Mo Prepaid ToGo SIM Kit for under $10 and give it a try. The Sidekick plan will be one of the options in the automated activation system if you get that far.

And you know GPRS and EDGE are NOT both 2g right? EDGE is considered a 3G radio technology and is part of ITU's 3G definition....

Not for everyone - if I only use 30 minutes of voice/month then both are ridiculously expensive.

    Agreed.

Re-read the OP though - they're interested in the data/text and not in the voice. The $40/mo voice charge is just rape in the case where all you want is a networked computer / pager in your pocket.

Personally, if they'd offer $30/mo data/text only I'd be tickled. And if I take the OP's tone correctly, they would too.

The person above was halfway correct when they said "T-Mobile will not allow this".. The fact is.. It does work.. and.. Its Free..

Let me explain.. I've been testing a setup like this for several months now..
I got a rooted g1, ordered a prepaid sidekick simcard from the t-mobile website.

When the sim came, i setup my account on the tmobile webpage, installed the sim card.. and sure enough.. no network connection.. So i pulled up the terminal emulator on the rooted g1 and started doing ping tests..

    ping Yahoo!.. nothing..
    ping myhomeipaddress .. bingo.. connection..

sshed into home server and it connected.

It seems that to T-mobile.. blocking internet access on devices means only blocking access to their DNS servers..

So.. i used connectbot to create a dynamic socks proxy on my home server, and setup the socks proxy on android and bingo.. full network connection in android..

And it gets even better from there..

The prepaid sim card is loooooooong ago expired.. and.. yet i still have a full connection.. Granted i have no voice, and no SMS access.. but who cares? I've got full free wireless internet in my hand where ever i go..

    ;)

Never let anyone tell you something not possible.

The process of getting it all to work is a lil technical.. But.. You can download Opera Mini from the android market wich connects thru a socks proxy by default and it will work right out of the box... But on that setup, Opera Mini will be the only application that has network access.

But still ya cant bitch about free..

I know this is old, but G1 + sidekick plan does work, at least on my old G1 it work.
8080 port block is real, and I do get around it to make it work.

This is poor mans 3G, and I maybe charge $25 dollar to make it work for some people later when I can write a program for it, and I will post video link later to prove my phone DOES work.

it is not guaranteed since if t-mobile may block all sidekick port someday if there is too many user on this kind of mod, and if you talk a lot, is really not worth it.
15c a minute is gone fast, unless you use to call less than 200 minute a month (30 bucks can buy around 160 minute), than go for it, if not, you better stay away from this because you will charge your phone like 500 bucks and gone by next 3 month.

ALL program REQUIRE CONNECTION will not work, you need rewrite the program since this tweak is kind of reset, and normal program is design for normal user, so code must need to rewrite to make it work. ALL CONNECTION REQUIRE program will not work I repeat.

you can use internet for sure, and do have 3G speed, it is super fast on O mini, but that is about it, no flash (youtube program will not work) or any other things.
can still download stuff if they don't use flash, waiting for FULL flash support browser or mod so this phone can be totally unlock.

G1 sure is highest Cost/Performance ratio 3G phone in market now, those high end HTC will not worth it since they just being little better than this original 3G.
This prototype, is the beast ready to being unleash in your hands.

Compare G1 I think this it must be an custom RX-78, and we all want the new type mod now......

you have to call tmobile to get android internet...otherwise you will have limited access to internet and most of your (internet required) apps wont work

Does it take awhile to move from pay as you go to sidekick prepaid?

can't give out the full setting yo, other wise everyone use it (is already LOTs of people around me ask me to tweak for them which I did.....)

only thing i use is tether, and nope I don't think is worth it since phone can get SUPER HOT, now I have a xbox360 heat sink fan mount on the back of my G1 when I ready to tether the hell out of it, thinking using my water cool cpu kit and take out the face plate of whole phone.

I already get a huge battery on it, it last me whole day with EVERYTHING ON.
