As far as helping the phone to look better in appearance, try using a different launcer. (ADW Launcher, GO Luncher, etc.) Amazon has a daily free app. Let us know what other things your using your phone for. That way we can give better recommended apps.

increase in performance = increase in battery use most cases.

Saving battery has several apps out there, like Juice Defender or Green Power, but how fast your battery is used up depends more on how much you use the phone. Battery saver apps can only help reduce the battery cost when the phone is idle, but not during the time you use it.
