The link for update.zip to root your phone is a dead link. Can someone please post an updated link so I can download this file and any other files I need to root.

    Thanks

If you install any of the new roms that have come out, they all come with root. You don't need the old update.zip

I think you need to be a bit more specific...

I believe his is referring to the update.zip to root your phone. If he is stock, he can not install a custom rom until the root has been applied...

Don't you need to be root before installing any new ROMS. I have never rooted my phone. It's not even a week old yet.

I should have stated that the link is dead in the Root Guide for the Droid. The account is suspended where it is hosted at.

Do you realize that you can just install whatever ROM you want once you have SP Recovery? You don't need to install the update.zip (which is just a rooted 2.1 ROM I think) first. Unless that's all you want then I'd skip that step and just install Bugless Beast or Cyanogen or whatever it is that you want.

    No I didn't realize that.

Good point, and no, I did not know that. I rooted back in December, this was not possible back then...Thanks for the clarification!

The only reason you'd want to use this update.zip is if you just want to download ROM Manager and switch straight to Clockwork Recovery (arguably better than SP Recovery) and use ROM Manager to do all your ROMming which is a bit simpler and user friendly.

I want to use ROM Manager.

Well you can always install ROM manager once you're rooted.

Here's the deal. That ESE81 with SP Recovery .sbf file gives you SP Recovery but the version of 2.1 is NOT rooted, meaning you have to use SP Recovery to flash a rooted ROM because you need root to download ROM manager.

You can just use the update.zip listed there to get a vanilla rooted 2.1 and get ROM manager then use that to download whatever ROM you want from there. Or you can just get the .zip for whatever ROM it is that you want and then you'll still be rooted and able get ROM Manager, ClockworkMod recovery etc.

Doing the latter means you skip a step, but you'll have to figure out which ROM you want and find the .zip or SP Recovery nandroid to install it.

For example if you want the latest FRF57 (Android 2.2) based ROM by Pete you'd just download FRF57V01.zip and rename it update.zip and install with SP Recovery.

Cool thanks for the info. I think I might just root first that way I can make a vanilla backup for one of the "Oh shit" moments.

BTW, thank you for reading enough that you understand what we are saying...I can see you put some research in before you asked here...

@ nstallion, great info. Since I rooted so long ago, I had no idea things where that much easier!!!

I try and read as much as I can before asking, but at the same time I'm never afraid to ask for help.

I do have to say that things where a little confusing because I was reading how to root 2.0 and 2.1 without realizing it. Now it's all clear now thanks to everyone here.
