This is on Engadget this morning:
Android 2.1 looking fast, furious on Motorola Droid -- Engadget

It looks great, and I know that everyone is just going to say that Bugless Beast, etc. is better; however, I rooted and then went back to stock b/c I was getting too many fc's, so I'm really looking forward to this! It really does look pretty slick to me; I especially like the music update.

That video is of the same build ERE 25 that all the new roms are based on. Pete has one so does Chevy and I am sure some others. I am using chevys and its faster and much better battery life than anything else I have used

Yep, ROMs are nice, but I really need my phone to work when I use it. I can't afford a fc or other glitches when I'm using it on the go, so I'd rather stay stock and wait for the OTA to come down from above... I'm really hoping that they go with 5 screens though...

Your post implies that these custom ROMs are instable. I don't think that could be further from the truth. All of the current custom ROMs are as stable as your stock 2.0.1. The only downside I see to the current 2.1 custom ROMs is that they are running them over a 2.0 kernel ... and that's not my idea of "optimized". Along with some of the other parts of the O/S.

I don't mean to be argumentative ... just want to set the record straight from my perspective. I am, however, waiting for the official 2.1 release to run a 2.1 ROM as well. :)

I didn't mean to imply anything; I was just going on my experience. I knew when I posted that the natural reaction most users on here have now is, "Why wait for the OTA when BB, etc. run the same and we have them now?" It was my experience when I rooted that I got a lot more fc's and an overall less fluid experience. It's not a knock on ROMs, just a reflection of how things went when I tried it.

You know that the ROM in that video is readily available right? And not in custom form, it can be installed stock, just the way it came. Honestly that post by Engadget was ******ed because ERE builds aren't the ones we will be getting, ESE is.

I was really just glad to see a positive post on Engadget about Android. It seems like you only see articles on how bad the Market is, or how it's doomed because of fragmentation. But there was the article about how the Droid's mt is better than the N1's, and then this article that actually said that the new OTA looked good.

They said on the "Engadget Show" on Sunday, it's basically ready. I think they said sometime in the next few weeks. I can't wait for it as well...

Yeah, I'm running the ERE25 on mine, which is a official ROM, just not "the" official final release. It's suppose to be the update they were going to put out, before they changed their mind. It's the 2.1 that you see in the video I believe, and it's stable as can be. I agree with the post on needing stable function. I have tried all the custom ROM's and they always seem to have one issue or so that force me back to a stocker. I am hoping that the official end release will be as great as everyone is building it up to be, if not, I may be in search again. Not knocking anyone's custom work, as I truly love what they have to offer, but having my phone freeze and lockup, or my alarm not going off in the morning to wake me up, is a BIG no no for me. Maybe now that the cooks have a 2.1 true base to work off of, we will see bigger and better things coming (fingers crossed).

Did you mean ESD? Or did it change to ESE in 2.1? Because mine in 2.0.1 says ESD56?
