Help Virgin Desire unlocked - factory reset now sim not detected

I got a HTC Desire from Virgin in the UK, locked to Virgin of course. I had it unlocked and used a 3 sim for a while. I lent the phone to a friend to use with his 3 sim and before returning he did a factory reset. This was annoying as the whole setup has been lost but also now the phone no longer recognises my 3 sim when it is inserted. This 3 sim works fine in another phone.

Did the reset return the phone to its original factory locked condition? Will paying for another reset make it work again or could there be another issue? Answering my own question - the reset did not undo the unlock. I was merely doing something stupid.....
