Root What is rooting? What does it do? Should I do it?

I just bought on eBay a Milestone Telus version (yay!) and Ive been hearing all this stuff about rooting and all that, Ive had the N1, Hero, X10 and now im getting the Milestone, I have never had any problems as far as software or speed on any of those phones, so what are the advantages of rooting and should I do it to my Milestone? Thanks.

One of the advantages of rooting a phone is that you can remove system apps that you don't need to free up system resources.
