Why so many variations of the Galaxy S?

Why were there so many different variations of this phone? They called it something different on every carrier. Isn't that counter-productive to building brand recognition? I think they have the idea with the Galaxy S III being the same thing across the board; it is definitely beneficial to simplify your product lineup.
 
There are indeed many 'versions' like galaxy s plus, advance, s2, s3,... They just use this as a line of their brand.

Like ExtremeNerd said they have a galaxy phone for every price range. They are very different in the inside and try to follow the same look on the outside ( although they doesn't always look the same at all.)
