Why so many variations of the Galaxy S?

Why were there so many different variations of this phone? They called it something different on every carrier. Isn't that counter-productive to building brand recognition? I think they have the idea with the Galaxy S III being the same thing across the board; it is definitely beneficial to simplify your product lineup.

It IS a branding thing. Much in the way of Verizon in the states using the "Droid" name, the Galaxy S is well known. They have phones for each price point using the name.

There are indeed many 'versions' like galaxy s plus, advance, s2, s3,... They just use this as a line of their brand.

Like ExtremeNerd said they have a galaxy phone for every price range. They are very different in the inside and try to follow the same look on the outside ( although they doesn't always look the same at all.)

I just wish there was a galaxy s 3 variant with keyboard.

There is, kind of. T-Mobile has the Galaxy S 4G Relay, which has the same form factor but not specs. There just isn't a demand for high end phones with keyboards. I can't remember the last time a slider made me go "Wow." They're typically mid-low range entry level devices at this point.
